Biography
NINGNING is a Chinese singer and performer based in South Korea. She is a member of the K-pop girl group aespa, formed by SM Entertainment, where she serves as a main vocalist and contributes to the group’s powerful vocal performances. Known for her expressive singing, wide vocal range, and charismatic presence, NINGNING has played a key role in establishing aespa’s musical identity.
Early Life and Education
NINGNING was born Ning Yizhuo (宁艺卓) on October 23, 2002, in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China. She grew up in China and displayed a strong interest in music and performance from a young age. Before signing with SM Entertainment, she received formal vocal training and studied various singing styles.
She auditioned for SM Entertainment as a trainee and was accepted into the company, moving to South Korea to pursue her career as a K-pop artist. During her trainee period, she focused on refining her vocals, Korean language skills, and overall performance capabilities in preparation for her official debut.
Career
Pre-Debut and SM Trainee (Pre-2020)
NINGNING joined SM Entertainment as a trainee, where she trained alongside the other aespa members. Her training encompassed vocals, dance, performance technique, and language, preparing her for the highly competitive environment of K-pop.
Debut with aespa (2020–Present)
NINGNING was officially introduced as the fourth member of aespa on October 27, 2020. She debuted with the group on November 17, 2020 with the digital single Black Mamba, which marked the beginning of aespa’s journey as a groundbreaking global K-pop group.
aespa’s concept blends real-world personas with virtual avatars called “æ,” creating a unique narrative that connects digital and real identities – a concept in which NINGNING and the other members play central roles.
Controversies
Ningning once unexpectedly faced significant criticism in South Korea. The reason was, during the worldwide excitement over the results of the speed skating event at the Winter Olympics held in Beijing, China, Ningning sent a message in Chinese on the Bubble platform to congratulate the gold medalists from her homeland. Interestingly, the perplexing failure of the South Korean team at that year’s Olympics made Ningning’s Bubble update become “ill-timed.” Knetizens directed their anger towards the youngest member of the aespa as a manifestation of frustration towards the national team.
On another occasion, when aespa was present in France to attend Paris Fashion Week 2022, fans lined up, standing in anticipation outside the hotel where aespa was staying. While the three members Giselle, Winter, and Karina continuously waved, smiled, and bid farewell to fans, the youngest member Ningning ignored them, even covering her ears with her hands until getting into the car. The idol not only covered her ears but also wore a displeased expression, crossing her arms in frustration while sitting in the car and disregarding fans when they called her name.
During a New Year’s celebration event, Ningning also sparked controversy by not performing the traditional Korean greeting despite being active in the K-pop market. Her actions were criticized for not respecting the fans, who are the direct source of her income, livelihood, and artistic career.
aespa Ningning has recently come under fire from Japanese netizens after showing a decorative lamp on the fan platform Bubble. The lamp’s shape resembling a mushroom cloud, similar to the atomic bomb explosion immediately triggered outrage in Japan, where imagery connected to Hiroshima and Nagasaki remains deeply sensitive.
