Mnet’s survival show Boys II Planet officially wrapped up on September 25, 2025, with the final episode announcing the debut lineup of the global boy group ALPHA DRIVE ONE (ALD1), set to promote for five years. The group consists of eight members: Lee Sangwon, Zhou An Xin, He Xinlong, Kim Geonwoo, Zhang Jiahao, Lee Leo, Chung Sanghyeon, and Kim Junseo. Immediately after the finale, Mnet launched ALD1’s official social media channels, drawing strong attention from global audiences. However, the debut lineup has sparked controversy due to numerous scandals tied to its members.
Bullying Allegations
The first to draw criticism is Kim Geonwoo, accused of bullying after an anonymous netizen claimed he harassed other trainees at “Company B.” According to the post, Geonwoo was favored by staff members in the training team and abused this influence to mistreat others, allegedly causing some trainees to suffer from depression and anxiety. Although he issued an apology, public response has remained largely negative.
Many online users dug into Geonwoo’s past, noting this was not the first time he had been associated with attitude-related controversies. Some fans criticized Mnet for including him in the debut lineup, calling it a “stain” on ALD1’s image from the start. Others argued his apology was insufficient and that debuting him was unfair to other trainees. Still, some fans defended him, pointing out the anonymous nature of the accusations and lack of evidence. Nevertheless, the issue has placed heavy public pressure on the group from the outset.
Misogynistic Lyrics Resurface
Another member, Lee Leo, faced severe backlash after old lyrics containing misogynistic and violent references—some alluding to assault—were resurfaced. These lyrics were cited as a major reason he was previously dropped from BIGHIT Music’s Trainee A project. Leo later issued a public apology, admitting his immaturity at the time.
However, his participation in Boys II Planet reignited debate, with many questioning whether it was appropriate to debut a trainee with a history of misogyny. Doubts remain about whether he has truly learned from his mistakes.
Bar Visits Before Debut
Former Trainee A member Lee Sangwon also came under fire after reports surfaced that he frequented bars before his debut. While visiting bars is not illegal, many netizens criticized the behavior as unprofessional for a trainee preparing to debut, especially given the scrutiny idols face.
Adding to the backlash, Sangwon was labeled an “incel” after being photographed sitting in a priority seat reserved for pregnant women on public transportation. The image spread widely online, sparking criticism of his awareness and attitude.
Mocking Non-Debut Trainees
After the final lineup was announced, some ALD1 members were accused of mocking a trainee who failed to debut. Although the severity of the incident is debated, many fans condemned the act as insensitive and disrespectful, raising concerns about the group’s image and dynamics.
Public Image at Risk
Instead of being celebrated for their talent, performances, and growth from Boys II Planet, ALD1 is now facing widespread backlash from both domestic and international fans. The string of individual scandals not only fuels public disappointment but also creates major hurdles in building a positive group image.
