In a heartfelt testimony, Lee Seong-geun, father of AKMU members Lee Chan-hyuk and Lee Su-hyun, opened up about a long and painful journey of parenting, faith, and reconciliation. Featured in a recent video titled “The Amazing Change That Happens When You Entrust Parenting to God” on the YouTube channel “CompassionKR”, the missionary shared deeply personal stories about raising his children during a difficult time in Mongolia.
Lee recounted how the family lived in economic hardship while doing homeschooling abroad. During this time, his son Chan-hyuk entered adolescence, a phase that Lee candidly admitted he was ill-equipped to handle.

“That was when Chan-hyuk started experiencing teenage rebellion. I didn’t know how to respond,” he confessed. “I became an angry, overbearing father, and our family relationships grew strained.”
The turning point came during a short family retreat, initiated by his wife. It was there, Lee said, that he experienced a spiritual epiphany.
“I realized the tension in our family wasn’t about God’s silence or my son’s behavior—it was about me. I was projecting my own unresolved wounds and frustrations onto my family.”
Lee admitted to lashing out when his children didn’t respond as he expected, mistaking silence for rebellion. Eventually, he sought forgiveness from his children, recognizing his own emotional immaturity.

“I told them I would still make mistakes but that I’d try to be better. That’s when Chan-hyuk smiled and said, ‘Dad, I forgive you. Just do your best.’”
Lee noted that although he still struggled with anger at times, the frequency diminished. His family began to notice the change. His daughter Su-hyun even remarked:
“If you’re the dad you are now, I could get married right away.”
The missionary concluded by reflecting that his transformation was not solely his doing, but rather the result of his family’s patience, love, and acceptance.
This rare, intimate look into the personal life of AKMU’s family adds new depth to the public image of the beloved sibling duo. Lee Seong-geun’s story is a poignant reminder of the power of humility, forgiveness, and faith in healing family wounds.
