ADOR “Local Government’s NewJeans Birthday Cafe Canceled Due to IP Concerns”

A cafe celebrating the 2nd debut anniversary of NewJeans, prepared by Gwangju Dong-gu Office to invigorate the local economy, was canceled due to concerns over copyright infringement

On July 19th, NewJeans‘ agency ADOR stated, “We determined that a public institution was engaging in commercial activities by using the artist’s IP without authorization for tourism promotion purposes.”

They further explained, “The public institution used the artist’s IP without permission to promote the area and the space itself, and there was a possibility that other businesses could profit through related product promotions. Thus, we decided to take action.”

Recently, Gwangju Dong-gu Office announced that they would hold an event from that day until July 22nd in the form of a “birthday cafe” to commemorate NewJeans’ 2nd debut anniversary. The office planned to display various goods, including NewJeans’ albums, posters, postcards and cups during the event.

However, these goods were unauthorized by the agency, raising the possibility of copyright infringement. Consequently, Gwangju Dong-gu Office canceled the event on July 18th.
