Actresses Youn Yuh-jung and Jung Ho-yeon named in the U.S Variety’s “Women That Have Made an Impact in Global Entertainment”
Youn Yuh-jung and Jung Ho-yeon, who led the K-content wave with movie “Minari” and drama “Squid Game”, were selected as influential women in the global entertainment industry.
On March 2nd (local time), “Minari” actress Youn Yuh-jung, “Squid Game” Jung Ho-yeon, Kim Joo-ryeong and CEO of production company Siren Pictures Kim Ji-yeon were named in the “Women That Have an Impact in Global Entertainment” released by the U.S entertainment media Variety.
Min Hee-jin, CEO of ADOR (a label of BTS’s agency – HYBE), and Kim Min-young, VP of Netflix’s Asia-Pacific (excluding) Content also appeared in the list. Youn Yuh-jung’s photo was put alongside that of Jane Campion, director of Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog”, and British actor Ruth Negga, who played the female lead in the movie “Passing”.
Variety described Youn Yuh-jung, “She has been turning in outstanding performances for over four decades, but it took until 2022 for the U.S to notice. That was the year the acclaimed Korean actor made her Hollywood film debut in ‘Minari’”, adding, “She played Soon-ja, an attractive character that was proved irresistible to audiences”.
Mentioning Youn Yuh-jung’s wins at the Oscar, the Screen Actors Guild Award (SAG) and the British Academy Award last year, Variety explained, “‘Minari’ has proved to be something of a new start for her”. Variety then introduced Jung Ho-yeon, Kim Joo-ryeong, and Kim Ji-yeon as “The Women of Squid Game”, saying, “It’s hard to overstate the gargantuan success of ‘Squid Game’ and its actors”.
As for Jung Ho-yeon, Variety mentioned her as the star who gained 23 million Instagram followers and a model who recently won the Best Actress at the SAG Award. Meanwhile, Kim Joo-ryeong was introduced as a “seasoned castmate”. CEO Min Hee-jin was evaluated as a “KPOP’s branding and design innovator”. Variety also said that she is planning to launch a new girl group this year.
The list was released in celebration of the International Women’s day on March 3rd. Last year, writer Kim Eun-hee of drama “Kingdom” and girl group BLACKPINK were selected. General VP Kim Min-young has been named for the second consecutive year.
