Originally touted as a “highly anticipated” show for the second half of the year by tvN, “Love Next Door” received mixed reactions from viewers, failing to meet expectations until its fourth episode. Specifically, the third episode recorded a low rating of 4.3%, leading to criticism that the show did not live up to its potential despite being in the prime time slot.

Viewers who followed the show up to the third episode expressed disappointment with what they saw as outdated settings, forced dialogue, and predictable plots. There were also complaints about the repetitive conflicts and reconciliations between the protagonists, Bae Seok-ryu and Choi Seung-hyo, which led to viewer fatigue. The forced dialogue led to awkward performances from the actors, adding to the show’s criticism.

However, since Jung Hae-in and Jung So-min are actors with proven acting skills from numerous works, the development of the protagonists’ relationship in the fourth episode has renewed the show’s character appeal. The chemistry between the “sub-couple” Jeong Mo-eum (Kim Ji-eun) and Kang Dan-ho (Yoon Ji-on) also adds enjoyable moments. Notably, in episode 4, Bae Seok-ryu’s active response to workplace harassment highlights the female protagonist’s charm.

Viewers who previously found the “childhood friends” interactions between Bae Seok-ryu and Choi Seung-hyo awkward are now responding positively to their growing romantic chemistry. Whether the romance between the two will continue to receive praise as the show progresses remains to be seen. Overall, while “Love Next Door” is a drama full of clichés, it is recognized for being light, comfortable, and enjoyable.
