A longtime friend of Koo Jun-yup (DJ Koo) has spoken publicly for the first time to dispute recent reports surrounding the late Barbie Hsu‘s estate, insisting that rumors of conflict between Koo Jun-yup and Barbie Hsu’s family are “not true.”
In an interview with Korean media outlet MHN Sports, the unnamed acquaintance described Koo Jun-yup’s current life in Taiwan, saying the entertainer remains focused on mourning his late wife rather than the ongoing inheritance controversy.
According to the friend, Koo Jun-yup continues to stay in Taiwan and spends much of his time near Barbie Hsu’s resting place. “Jun-yup is still by Hui-won’s side,” the source said, referring to Barbie Hsu by her Korean name, Seo Hee-won.
The acquaintance added that Koo Jun-yup has largely withdrawn from public life and rarely communicates with friends in South Korea. “He hardly answers calls from Korea. Even when I spoke with him recently, he was still by Hui-won’s side.”
Recent Taiwanese media reports have claimed that legal procedures regarding Barbie Hsu’s estate are ongoing and suggested that Koo Jun-yup has not formally relinquished his inheritance rights.
The reports fueled speculation because, shortly after Barbie Hsu’s passing in February, Koo publicly stated that he intended to entrust all authority regarding the estate to his mother-in-law. However, his friend said Koo Jun-yup has shown little interest in the public debate. “Jun-yup isn’t paying attention to this issue at all. No matter what people say.”
The source added that Koo Jun-yup is unlikely to make any public statements about the controversy. “He probably won’t respond. That’s the kind of person he is. Right now, Hui-won is the only thing that’s important to him. I don’t think he’s interested in anything else.”
The source also rejected speculation that Koo Jun-yup’s relationship with Barbie Hsu’s family has deteriorated. “There’s absolutely no problem with the family. In fact, they’re getting along very well.” According to the acquaintance, Barbie Hsu’s mother continues to care for Koo Jun-yup. “His mother-in-law even cooks meals for him herself.”
The friend also addressed reports that Koo Jun-yup recently relocated. Rather than indicating any conflict, the move was simply made for convenience, the source explained. “The cemetery was too far away. It wasn’t easy making a two-hour round trip every day, so he moved somewhere closer. I think that situation ended up being misunderstood and led to all kinds of speculation.”
The acquaintance said Koo Jun-yup’s close friends intentionally avoid bringing up Barbie Hsu in conversation, believing he should process his grief at his own pace. “I don’t ask him anything either.” Explaining why, the friend added: “I think the right thing to do is wait until Jun-yup is ready on his own.” The source also said those around Koo Jun-yup believe that giving him time is more important than discussing the ongoing media reports.
Since Barbie Hsu passed away in February 2026, Koo Jun-yup has largely suspended his public activities and remained in Taiwan to mourn his wife. Although reports surrounding the late actress’s estate continue to circulate, Koo has not issued any new public statement regarding the inheritance proceedings or the recent speculation.
For now, according to someone close to him, his focus remains on honoring the memory of his late wife rather than responding to outside rumors.
