For many fans, the history of modern K-pop is inseparable from the history of YG Entertainment. As the agency celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, it is looking back on three decades of shaping the industry through groundbreaking artists, distinctive musical identity, and innovative production systems.

From pioneering hip-hop acts to global superstars like PSY, BIGBANG, 2NE1, and BLACKPINK, YG has consistently played a defining role in expanding K-pop’s influence around the world.

Founded on May 20, 1996, the company initially operated under the name Hyun Planning before becoming Major Flavor (MF) in 1997, Yanggun Planning in 1998, and finally YG Entertainment in 2001.

Although the company’s name evolved over the years, founder and executive producer Yang Hyun Suk maintained a clear vision: creating artist-driven content while constantly adapting to public taste.

Musically, YG established its identity early through Keep Six, whose debut album embraced hip-hop, R&B, and new jack swing. While the group’s commercial response was modest, the agency chose to refine its signature sound rather than abandon it—a philosophy that continues to define YG today.

YG found its first major breakthrough with Jinusean, whose authentic hip-hop style stood apart from the dance-pop trends dominating the late 1990s. The success continued with 1TYM, who combined genuine hip-hop influences with idol appeal while participating directly in songwriting and production—an uncommon practice at the time.

The company also fostered collaboration among its artists through the YG Family project, one of Korea’s earliest label-wide albums. The initiative laid the groundwork for the in-house production system that would later become a hallmark of the agency.

During the early 2000s, YG broadened its musical portfolio by partnering with the R&B label M Boat, introducing acclaimed vocalists including Wheesung, Gummy, and Big Mama. The agency also established YG Underground, showcasing underground hip-hop artists such as YMGA, 45RPM, Red Roc, and reggae-hip-hop duo Stony Skunk on mainstream music programs. Meanwhile, SE7EN became one of YG’s earliest international success stories, launching albums and concert tours in Japan, while Lexy emerged as one of Korea’s few female solo hip-hop artists during that era.

BIGBANG

The arrival of BIGBANG in 2006 and 2NE1 in 2009 transformed both YG and the broader K-pop landscape. BIGBANG produced a string of iconic hits including “Lies,” “Haru Haru,” “Fantastic Baby,” and “Bang Bang Bang,” while members also found success through solo and unit projects.

Meanwhile, 2NE1 revolutionized girl group concepts with their confident storytelling and “girl crush” image, producing hits like “Fire” and “I Don’t Care.” Both groups also became pioneers in introducing K-pop to international audiences, helping establish the global reputation the industry enjoys today.

In 2010, YG made its first major external signing by bringing PSY into the company, followed by artists including Epik High and SECHSKIES. The agency further diversified its roster with Lee Hi, AKMU, WINNER, and iKON, each contributing different musical styles. PSY’s global phenomenon “Gangnam Style” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a landmark example of combining YouTube with global music promotion.

In 2016, BLACKPINK debuted and quickly became one of the world’s biggest girl groups. Their second full-length album, BORN PINK, topped both the UK Official Albums Chart and the Billboard 200, cementing BLACKPINK’s status as one of K-pop’s biggest global acts. The group’s third mini-album, DEADLINE, released this year after a three-year-and-five-month hiatus as a full group, reportedly broke the company’s first-day and first-week sales records.

YG continues investing in its future through newer groups including TREASURE and BABYMONSTER. TREASURE has built a strong reputation for energetic live performances and touring, while BABYMONSTER has earned praise for showcasing live vocals with handheld microphones during music show performances. The company also announced a major restructuring last year alongside expanded trainee recruitment.

YG plans to debut its first new boy group in six years this September. The five-member team is expected to distinguish itself from TREASURE with a different musical direction.

Meanwhile, the agency is preparing a new four-member girl group, tentatively titled Next Monster, following BABYMONSTER. Three members—Eveli, Chanya, and Kacey—have already been revealed, with one final member yet to be announced.

Over three decades, YG Entertainment has evolved from a niche hip-hop label into one of the companies most closely associated with the global rise of K-pop. Through artists ranging from Jinusean and BIGBANG to PSY, BLACKPINK, TREASURE, and BABYMONSTER, the label has continually influenced musical trends, artist development, and the industry’s international expansion. As it enters its fourth decade, YG is once again betting on a new generation of talent to carry its legacy forward.
