Netflix is set to premiere its new Korean psychological thriller, Notes from the Last Row, starring acclaimed actor Choi Min-sik and rising star Choi Hyun-wook. Blending literary themes with psychological suspense, the six-episode series explores the complex relationship between a failed writer and a gifted student whose talent reignites long-buried ambitions.
Notes from the Last Row follows Heo Mun-oh, a struggling novelist and Korean literature professor played by Choi Min-sik. Trapped by insecurity and haunted by unrealized dreams, Mun-oh finds his stagnant life transformed after discovering the extraordinary writing talent of Lee Kang, a mysterious student who always sits in the back row of his classroom.

As Lee Kang’s exceptional work rekindles Mun-oh’s passion for creativity, the two become entangled in a complicated relationship fueled by admiration, envy, and ambition. The drama promises to explore the darker sides of human nature while examining the emotional cost of artistic desire and personal failure.
Speaking at the production press conference on June 24, Choi Min-sik explained that the script’s literary atmosphere was the primary reason he joined the project. “I wanted to participate in a work that carries a strong literary spirit. This is a story that gives viewers room to reflect. Mun-oh’s flaws feel very realistic, and audiences may find parts of themselves in the character.”
The veteran actor added that Mun-oh is a man consumed by inferiority and extreme jealousy, leading him to spend considerable time discussing the character’s psychology with the director and production team.

The series is directed by Kim Gyu-tae, known for acclaimed dramas including Our Blues and The Trunk. Kim Gyu-tae revealed that he was captivated by the screenplay from the very beginning. “I read the entire script in one sitting because I was so curious about what would happen next. The drama combines entertainment and literary depth in a very unique way.”
The director also highlighted the chemistry between Choi Min-sik and Choi Hyun-wook, noting that the younger actor possesses a distinctive gaze and energy capable of creating tension through even the smallest expressions.
For Choi Hyun-wook, working alongside Choi Min-sik proved to be a valuable learning experience. The actor admitted that he was frequently overwhelmed by his senior co-star’s presence and professionalism on set. “I was often amazed by Choi Min-sik’s energy and presence during filming. Without his guidance, it would have been difficult for me to fully explore the depth of Lee Kang as a character.”

The project marks another significant step in Choi Hyun-wook’s rapidly growing career, following a series of acclaimed performances that have established him as one of Korea’s most promising young actors.
Unlike many modern productions that emphasize visual spectacle, Notes from the Last Row places its focus squarely on character psychology and internal conflict. According to director Kim Gyu-tae, the drama avoids superficial glamour in favor of exploring authentic emotions and the hidden darkness within people. Choi Min-sik echoed this sentiment, describing the series as a thought-provoking work best experienced during quiet moments. “This is not a comfortable drama. It encourages viewers to reflect on human nature and the complexities of life.”
Notes from the Last Row consists of six episodes and is scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix on June 26.
