Netflix’s upcoming original series The East Palace is quickly emerging as one of the platform’s most anticipated global releases.

Combining Korean occult elements with historical storytelling, the series has already attracted significant attention thanks to its unique genre blend and star-studded cast featuring Nam Joo Hyuk, Roh Yoon Seo, and Cho Seung Woo. The project is generating even more excitement as it marks Cho Seung Woo’s first drama in nearly three years.

A Palace Filled With Ghosts and Curses: A New Kind of Occult Historical Drama

On June 12, Netflix officially confirmed that The East Palace will premiere on July 17 and unveiled the series’ official poster.

The story follows Gucheon, a man capable of traveling between the human world and the realm of spirits, and Saenggang, a palace maid who can hear the voices of ghosts. Acting under royal orders, the two investigate the mysterious curse surrounding the East Palace.

Unlike traditional Korean historical dramas that focus primarily on political struggles or romance, The East Palace places supernatural entities, curses, and otherworldly dimensions at the center of its narrative. The series also draws inspiration from Korean shamanistic beliefs and ghost folklore, weaving them into the setting of the Joseon royal court.

The newly released poster features Gucheon walking into a dark pond while bound by ropes. Carrying peach tree branches on his back, he is surrounded by a crimson aura that creates an eerie atmosphere. The tagline, “Beyond the boundary of reality, into the world of spirits,” offers a glimpse into the drama’s supernatural universe.

Nam Joo Hyuk, Roh Yoon Seo, and Cho Seung Woo Lead a Powerful Cast

The cast is one of the project’s biggest draws.

Nam Joo Hyuk takes on the role of Gucheon, a mysterious figure with the ability to slay spirits. Known for acclaimed projects such as Vigilante, Twenty-Five Twenty-One, Start-Up, The School Nurse Files, and The Light in Your Eyes, the actor selected The East Palace as his first major project following his military discharge.

During Netflix’s “Next on Netflix 2026 Korea” event, Nam Joo Hyuk teased viewers by saying, “You’ll see spectacular visuals combined with a variety of action sequences.” His transformation from his familiar gentle image into a darker, action-oriented character has become one of the drama’s major talking points.

Roh Yoon Seo stars as Saenggang, the palace maid who possesses the ability to hear spirits. After making memorable impressions through projects such as Our Blues and Crash Course in Romance, she now steps into a leading role in a Netflix original series for the first time.

The actor attracting the greatest attention, however, is Cho Seung Woo.

The acclaimed star, whose 2012 drama The King’s Doctor achieved a peak rating of 23.7%, is returning to television for the first time since JTBC’s Divorce Attorney Shin in 2023. In The East Palace, Cho Seung Woo plays the king, the central figure who summons Gucheon and Saenggang to investigate the secrets hidden within the palace. The character is said to possess a deeply complex inner world, leading viewers to anticipate another nuanced performance from the veteran actor.

A Proven Creative Team Raises Expectations

The production team behind The East Palace is equally impressive.

Writers Kwon So Ra and Seo Jae Won, known for The Guest and Bulgasal: Immortal Souls, have reunited for the project, while director Choi Jung Kyu, who helmed The Devil Judge and Children of Nobody, takes charge of the series.

Kwon So Ra and Seo Jae Won are widely regarded as leading creators in the Korean occult genre. The Guest explored possession and exorcism, while Bulgasal: Immortal Souls built an ambitious mythology around reincarnation and curses. With The East Palace, they expand their signature storytelling into the royal courts of Joseon, blending history and the supernatural on a larger scale.

Netflix also appears to have high hopes for the series.

Earlier this year, The East Palace was included in Netflix’s official “Global 2026 Lineup” showcase alongside international hits such as Bridgerton, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Emily in Paris, One Piece, and Enola Holmes. Notably, The East Palace was the only Asian title featured among the highlighted projects.

Nam Joo Hyuk’s appearance in the lineup’s opening promotional video further suggested that Netflix is positioning the series as a major global release.

With Teach You a Lesson recently reaching No. 1 in Netflix’s Global Non-English TV rankings just three days after its release, industry observers are eager to see whether The East Palace can continue that momentum.

Consisting of eight episodes, The East Palace combines a distinctly Korean occult mythology, a star-powered cast, and a highly respected creative team, making it one of Netflix’s most anticipated Korean dramas of the summer.

As industry expectations continue to rise, The East Palace is set to premiere worldwide on Netflix on July 17.
