Actor Heo Nam-jun is winning over viewers with his standout performance in the hit SBS drama My Royal Nemesis, proving that he is more than capable of leading a romantic comedy.

The series follows Shin Seo-ri, played by Lim Ji-yeon, an unknown actress whose personality changes after becoming possessed by the spirit of Joseon-era herbal healer Kang Dan-sim. Her life becomes entangled with Cha Se-gye, a ruthless chaebol heir portrayed by Heo Nam-jun, who is often described as a “monster created by capitalism.”

Since premiering with a nationwide rating of 4.1%, My Royal Nemesis has steadily gained momentum, surpassing the 10% mark by its sixth episode. Much of the drama’s growing popularity has been attributed to Heo Nam-jun’s charismatic portrayal of Cha Se-gye.

Known primarily for his work in more serious romance dramas and thrillers, Heo Nam-jun’s casting in a romantic comedy initially sparked curiosity among viewers. The actor had previously built his reputation through dramatic roles, including memorable villain performances, making this genre shift a notable challenge.

However, Heo Nam-jun has quickly silenced any doubts. His polished visuals, commanding screen presence, and strong line delivery have helped establish Cha Se-gye as one of the drama’s most compelling characters. While maintaining the cold and intimidating aura of a wealthy heir, he has also showcased impressive comedic timing.

One of the character’s most appealing qualities is the contrast between his intimidating exterior and surprisingly clumsy personality. Early episodes featured humorous moments in which Cha Se-gye mistakenly believed Shin Seo-ri was part of a scam operation, leading to an absurd confrontation involving flowers and mock sword fighting. These scenes added levity while revealing the character’s hidden charm.

The actor has also excelled at bringing warmth and humanity to the role. Whether buying medicine for Shin Seo-ri while questioning his own actions or hilariously misunderstanding her handwritten letter as a love confession, Heo Nam-jun has successfully transformed a seemingly unlikeable chaebol into a character audiences can root for.

His chemistry with Lim Ji-yeon has become another major highlight of the series. What began as a relationship filled with misunderstandings and hostility has gradually evolved into a convincing romantic storyline, drawing viewers deeper into the drama.

With several episodes still remaining in its 12-episode run, My Royal Nemesis is increasingly being viewed as a potential career-defining project for Heo Nam-jun. Having already demonstrated his strengths in noir, thriller, and melodrama genres, the actor is now earning praise for his ability to balance romance and comedy, further cementing his status as one of Korea’s rising stars.
