Hospital Playlist co-stars Yoo Yeon Seok and Jung Kyung Ho recently went head-to-head with dramas built on similar concepts. However, the results could not have been more different. While both projects relied on ghost-seeing protagonists and comedic elements, differences in competition and storytelling ultimately determined their contrasting outcomes.
Despite sharing nearly identical premises, the two dramas delivered very different results. Yoo Yeon Seok’s SBS series “Phantom Lawyer” surpassed 8% viewership within its first week, signaling a strong start. It also gained significant buzz, ranking No.1 in TV topicality for the second week of March according to FUNdex. Yoo Yeon Seok himself ranked third in cast popularity.

The concept closely mirrors that of Oh My Ghost Clients, starring Jung Kyung Ho last year. Both dramas revolve around legal professionals who can see ghosts and help resolve the grievances of restless spirits. The similarities extend further: possession scenes that transform the main character’s personality for comedic effect, and a blend of occult themes with legal drama formats. Both actors also embraced bold, comedic transformations. Some viewers even commented, “It feels like the same show with a different title and channel,” and “Watching Yoo Yeon Seok strangely reminds me of Jung Kyung Ho.”
However, the difference in ratings largely came down to competition. “Oh My Ghost Clients” struggled, recording ratings between the 2% range and a peak of 5.6%. At the time, it faced tough rivals such as The Haunted Palace, which reached 11.0% ratings, and Our Unwritten Seoul, which captured over 20% of drama buzz share. Meanwhile, Good Boy maintained ratings in the 6% range, with its lead Park Bo Gum dominating cast popularity rankings for seven consecutive weeks. Ultimately, Jung Kyung Ho’s drama was overshadowed by stronger competitors.

In contrast, “Phantom Lawyer” benefited from a more favorable lineup. Competing shows such as In Your Radiant Season, The Practical Guide to Love, and Mad Concrete Dreams have remained in the 2–4% rating range. With a schedule dominated by mellow romance or high-barrier suspense dramas, Yoo Yeon Seok’s lighthearted comedic performance successfully attracted a broader audience.

Differences in tone and accessibility also played a role. While “Oh My Ghost Clients” focused on labor issues, which could feel heavy, “Phantom Lawyer” leaned more into comedy and added a romance line with Esom to enhance mass appeal. By featuring diverse cases across age groups and backgrounds, it tapped into the familiar yet engaging storytelling style that audiences enjoy.

In the end, even with similar concepts, timing and strategy led to completely different outcomes. Though both actors rose to fame together through Hospital Playlist, this “ghost-seeing lawyer” showdown appears to have ended in a clear win for Yoo Yeon Seok.
