According to recent reports, Cha Eun Woo was subjected to an intense tax audit by the Seoul Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Bureau #4, and was ultimately notified of a massive tax assessment related to income tax evasion. These revelations have emerged while Cha Eun Woo is currently serving in the military.
On January 26, he addressed the scandal directly through social media, stating, “I deeply apologize for causing concern and disappointment due to the recent matters involving me. I am reflecting on whether I have been appropriately responsible as a citizen regarding my duty to pay taxes.” He added, “I will sincerely comply with the ongoing tax-related procedures and will humbly accept the final outcome and bear responsibility accordingly.”

Cha Eun Woo also denied speculation that he enlisted to avoid the investigation: “It was never my intention to escape the situation through military enlistment. I had reached a point where it was no longer possible to postpone enlistment, which meant I could not complete the tax audit procedures before joining. I fully acknowledge and take responsibility for the misunderstanding that arose from my shortcomings.”
Meanwhile, Netflix’s The WONDERfools—slated for release in Q2 of this year—has now found itself entangled in the fallout. The drama, a comic action-adventure set in 1999, centers on a group of quirky locals who gain superpowers during a time of doomsday paranoia and unite to defend their city against a mysterious villain. The ensemble cast includes Park Eun Bin, Cha Eun Woo, Kim Hae Sook, Choi Dae Hoon, Im Sung Jae, and Son Hyun Joo.

At the recent ‘Next on Netflix 2026 Korea’ event, Park Eun Bin spoke warmly about her co-star Cha Eun Woo, saying, “I couldn’t imagine anyone else fitting this role better. I believe he’s doing well wherever he is. Although we can’t promote it together, I’ll do my best on his behalf. I hope he returns in glory—fighting!”
Her words, however, were quickly overshadowed by the tax scandal news. With the public and media closely watching, questions are now swirling around whether Netflix will move forward with the promotion and release of The WONDERfools as planned—or if Cha Eun Woo’s controversy will prompt a shift in strategy.
