Biography

Lee Tae-yong is a South Korean rapper, singer, dancer, songwriter, and producer. He is best known as the leader of NCT and a principal member of its Seoul-based fixed unit NCT 127, operating under SM Entertainment. He is also a member of the multinational project group SuperM.

Taeyong is widely regarded as one of the most influential leaders and performers of his generation, noted for his performance precision, creative involvement, and central role in shaping NCT’s musical and visual identity.

Early Life and Education

Taeyong was born in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, South Korea, and grew up in a non-entertainment family environment. He attended the School of Performing Arts Seoul (SOPA), from which he graduated in 2013.

In 2012, Taeyong was scouted by SM Entertainment despite having no formal background in dance or rap at the time. After entering SM’s trainee system, he underwent intensive training in rap, choreography, and performance. He was later introduced as part of SM Rookies, the company’s pre-debut platform showcasing future artists.

Career

Pre-Debut and SM Rookies (2013–2015)

As a member of SM Rookies, Taeyong participated in training showcases, dance videos, and live performances, gradually building recognition for his strong work ethic and rapid technical improvement. During this period, he began developing his skills in lyric writing and musical composition.

He made early public appearances in music videos and promotional content for senior SM artists, which contributed to his visibility prior to official debut.

Debut with NCT and Leadership Role (2016–present)

Taeyong officially debuted on April 9, 2016, as a member of NCT U with the single The 7th Sense. The track received critical attention for its experimental structure and performance-focused choreography, with Taeyong’s rap and stage presence highlighted as key elements.

In July 2016, he debuted as the leader of NCT 127, a permanent unit centered in Seoul. As leader, Taeyong assumed responsibility not only for musical performance but also for team cohesion, rehearsal management, and public representation.

SuperM and Global Expansion

In 2019, Taeyong debuted as a member of SuperM, a project group formed through collaboration between SM Entertainment and Capitol Records. The group targeted the global market, particularly North America, and engaged in extensive international promotions and tours.

Within SuperM, Taeyong maintained his role as a performance leader, frequently positioned at the center of choreography and high-impact stages.

Solo Activities

Taeyong released his first official solo digital single, “Long Flight” (2019), which emphasized artistic individuality and experimental sound. The song charted internationally and received attention for its atmospheric composition and introspective lyrics.

In addition to official releases, he has shared self-produced music through digital platforms, further demonstrating his development as an independent artist beyond group activities.
