Yoo Jae Suk, widely revered as South Korea’s “National MC,” has unexpectedly found himself at the center of repeated public controversies not for his own actions, but due to private scandals involving fellow entertainers he works with. A growing number of netizens have begun questioning why Yoo Jae Suk has remained silent and even demanding that he take responsibility for the controversies of junior colleagues appearing on programs he leads.
The situation escalated after Jo Se Ho became the subject of serious allegations from an anonymous gossip-based social media account, which accused him of having connections to organized crime, receiving luxury gifts, and promoting businesses linked to those individuals. Jo Se Ho’s agency, A2Z Entertainment, swiftly denied all claims, stating that the relationship was merely an acquaintance with no unethical exchanges involved. The company also announced it is reviewing both civil and criminal legal action against the spread of false information.
However, public scrutiny soon shifted away from Jo Se Ho and toward Yoo Jae Suk, who currently co-hosts You Quiz on the Block with him. Online comments quickly appeared asking, “Why isn’t Yoo Jae Suk speaking up?” and “Why isn’t the National MC managing his junior?”
This pattern is not new. In the past, Yoo Jae Suk faced similar backlash when Jo Se Ho was criticized for attending a breast cancer awareness event and later participating in a drinking party while comedian Park Mi Sun was undergoing medical treatment. Although Jo Se Ho publicly apologized to Park Mi Sun on television, a portion of netizens still directed their anger at Yoo Jae Suk for staying silent.
The same narrative resurfaced with actor Lee Yi Kyung. After Lee revealed that police had conducted searches and seizures related to individuals spreading malicious rumors about him, some netizens immediately accused Yoo Jae Suk of “shielding” Lee due to their connection on Hangout with Yoo. When Lee later disclosed that his exit from the variety show was recommended by the production team rather than being entirely his own decision, Yoo Jae Suk once again became the target of criticism, with accusations claiming he failed to protect his junior.
Amid the backlash, many netizens have instead expressed sympathy for Yoo Jae Suk. Comments such as, “This kind of criticism is completely unfair,” “I feel bad for him he’s not a god,” and “How could he possibly control someone else’s private life?” have circulated widely across forums, reflecting growing frustration over what many see as misplaced blame.
The situation intensified again on December 6, when Lee Yi Kyung won the “AAA Best Choice Award” at the 2025 Asia Artist Awards held at the Kaohsiung National Stadium in Taiwan. During his acceptance speech, Lee said, “Are you watching, SNL Korea? From now on, I’ll be resting on Thursdays,” directly referencing his departure from MBC’s Hangout with Yoo. He went on to thank colleagues from the show such as HaHa and Joo Woo Jae but notably did not mention Yoo Jae Suk.
This omission immediately sparked heated speculation online, with some netizens accusing Lee Yi Kyung of indirectly “taking a jab” at Yoo Jae Suk and displaying unprofessional behavior. Others argued that it was not merely the absence of Yoo’s name, but the tone and nuance of the speech that made the award ceremony atmosphere feel awkward and uncomfortable. Past interactions between the two were soon unearthed again, fueling even more intense debate. Harsh comments followed, with viewers saying, “Does he think the public is stupid?”, “Even joking about SNL alone was inappropriate,” and “He hurt his senior and now pretends he meant nothing.”
In response to the controversy, Lee Yi Kyung’s agency released an official statement emphasizing that he had no intention of targeting Yoo Jae Suk. The agency clarified, “His award speech was exactly as it appeared. We hope the public will take it at face value without unnecessary speculation.”
Despite having no direct involvement in any of the scandals, Yoo Jae Suk continues to be repeatedly dragged into the controversies of others placing the beloved MC under an unexpected and increasingly unfair spotlight.
