Recently, Chenle of NCT DREAM attended a fan-organized birthday celebration held at a café. Wanting to give fans a thoughtful gift, Chenle pre-purchased 50 custom drinks based on the café owner’s recommendation and paid 500,000 KRW.
However, fans soon raised complaints, revealing that the café only allowed them to order from the three cheapest drinks on the menu (ranging from 4,800 to 6,000 KRW). If they wanted a different drink, they had to pay extra. Even worse, those who ordered drinks prepaid by Chenle were not given any freebies which are typically included in fan café events because the owner stated that “freebies weren’t included in Chenle’s gift drinks.”

Moreover, several fans reported that the owner was rude and unfriendly when they ordered, further intensifying backlash.
Outraged, fans took to social media to voice their anger and called for a boycott of the café. Many pointed out that this particular café is notorious for charging venue rental fees based on the popularity of the idol the more famous the artist, the higher the rental price.
Amid mounting criticism, the café issued a public apology. They admitted that not all of the 500,000 KRW had been used in fact, 90,000 KRW remained unspent. The café promised to refund the full 500,000 KRW Chenle had paid for drinks, as well as return the entire 500,000 KRW location rental fee that was charged to the fans.
