On November 5 (local time), major international media outlets including Bloomberg and Variety reported that Netflix and Sony Pictures have finalized a co-production deal for KPop Demon Hunters 2. Given the nature of feature-length animation, the production timeline will be lengthy, and the release date may be adjusted depending on scheduling.

KPop Demon Hunters follows Huntr/x, a fictional K-pop girl group (featuring Rumi, Mira, and Zoey) who secretly battle evil spirits behind their glamorous stage personas. With a creative team heavily comprised of Korean talent, the action-fantasy animation was produced by Sony Pictures and premiered globally via Netflix in June.

The film became an immediate sensation, garnering over 300 million views on Netflix and surpassing Squid Game Season 1 as the most-watched content animated or live-action on the platform. Its OST, Golden, also made history by topping both the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Charts, proving the global influence of K-pop-infused animation.

A sing-along screening, which replicated a stage from the movie, grossed $19.2 million within just two days of release. It was recently re-screened during the Halloween season, reigniting public interest.

Director Maggie Kang hinted at a rich universe yet to be explored, telling the BBC, “There are still so many stories we can tell with these characters.” Co-director Chris Appelhans echoed the sentiment, adding that the sequel would expand into “new stages and musical dimensions.”

During a press conference in Korea last August, Kang added, “Nothing is officially confirmed yet for Season 2, but we have plenty of ideas and backstories. Many fans are waiting. If it happens, there are several groups I’d love to collaborate with. I also want to showcase a wider range of Korean music genres like trot and even heavy metal.”

Following the overwhelming success of KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix is launching a pop-up tour in December in Seoul’s Seongsu-dong. The event will expand to major Asian cities including Bangkok, Tokyo, and Taipei next year. These immersive experiences will allow fans to step directly into Huntr/x’s universe, further heightening anticipation for the sequel.

Whether K-Trot and other genres make it into KPop Demon Hunters 2 remains to be seen but one thing is clear: the global momentum behind this franchise isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
