On September 26, actress Song Ji-hyo officially marked her return to cinema after five years with the film Home behind Bars, directed by Cha Jung-yoon. The press screening and media conference were held at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul, with Song Ji-hyo, Do Young-seo, Ok Ji-young, and the director in attendance.
The film is a heartwarming human drama that tells the story of Tae-jeo, a veteran correctional officer of 15 years whose first act of unexpected compassion sparks a transformative connection. Focusing on the relationships among a female prison guard, an inmate, and the inmate’s daughter, the film portrays the power of guidance, empathy, and courage to bring about new beginnings.
Song Ji-hyo takes on the role of Tae-jeo, the experienced correctional officer, showcasing a new side of her acting. She is joined by Do Young-seo as Jun-young, the inmate’s daughter, and Ok Ji-young as Mi-young, the inmate. Together, they depict the touching bond of three women navigating hardship with resilience and warmth.
Director Cha Jung-yoon explained the inspiration behind the project, citing a 2008 episode of Documentary Three Days featuring Cheongju Women’s Prison. She revealed that her curiosity was piqued not only by the inmates’ stories but also by the stoic expressions of the correctional officers, sparking a decade-long journey that led to this film. After years of research, she finally completed the script and insisted on casting Song Ji-hyo, describing Song Ji-hyo as her “first and only choice.”
Song Ji-hyo admitted she was initially skeptical about being cast, noting that most people only recognize her bright, energetic image from variety shows. However, she found similarities between herself and Tae-jeo—both reserved, both shaped by life’s pressures. Through the role, Song rediscovered parts of herself she had long forgotten, describing the filming process as “healing.”
Speaking about the filming location in an abandoned Daegu prison, Song recalled being struck by the weight of the atmosphere. “It made me think, ‘I must never commit a crime. I must live life with more sincerity.’ The space itself demanded immersion,” she said.
Home behind Bars is set to premiere on October 15, and anticipation is high as Song Ji-hyo makes her long-awaited big screen comeback.
