Singer PSY (real name Park Jae-sang) is set to face police questioning amid allegations of receiving sleeping pills through proxy prescriptions.

At a press briefing on September 8, Park Hyun-soo, Acting Commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, confirmed that investigators are preparing to summon PSY in relation to the case. “We are conducting related interviews, analyzing seized materials, and investigating how the prescriptions were issued,” he said.

According to Seoul Seodaemun Police, PSY and a professor at a Seoul university hospital, identified only as Professor A, have been booked on suspicion of violating the Medical Service Act. Police allege that since 2022, PSY obtained prescriptions for psychotropic sleeping pills without undergoing in-person consultations, with his manager allegedly collecting the medication on his behalf.

PSY’s agency, P Nation, has admitted wrongdoing regarding the proxy collection of the prescription drugs, calling it a “clear mistake and lapse in judgment.” In a statement, the company clarified: “PSY has been diagnosed with chronic sleep disorder and has been taking sleeping pills under medical guidance and prescribed dosage. There was no proxy prescription, but the proxy collection of medication was indeed a mistake.”

The police have already conducted a search and seizure of the hospital to secure PSY’s medical records. Professor A has denied involvement in any illegal practices.

This incident comes as a blow to PSY, one of Korea’s most internationally recognized artists, as authorities intensify scrutiny of prescription practices for controlled substances in the entertainment industry.

The investigation is ongoing, and PSY is expected to be summoned soon for questioning.
