On September 3, Sohyang, one of South Korea’s most celebrated vocalists, officially announced her divorce after 25 years of marriage.

According to a statement from her agency KQ Entertainment, the decision was made based on “mutual respect and enough discussion”, emphasizing that “neither party was at fault.” The agency also urged the public to refrain from spreading distorted information or leaving harmful comments online.

Sohyang, known for her powerful vocals and emotional performances, personally confirmed the news in an interview, revealing that the divorce was finalized in 2023. She married her former husband, a member of the CCM group POS, in 1998, and though the couple did not have children, they maintained a loving marriage for over two decades.

In past interviews, Sohyang candidly spoke about undergoing surgery for uterine cancer, during which malignant cells were found. As a result, she had to remove one ovary, making natural pregnancy medically impossible.

“I wanted to give my husband the joy of having a child,” she once said, “but I couldn’t. I felt sorry for him.”

Despite the challenges, the couple supported each other for 25 years. Sohyang shared that a scene from the Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters—where the main character reveals her true identity—gave her the courage to go public with her own truth.

“It was a painful story, so it wasn’t easy to talk about. I was so absorbed in music production for the first time in a long time that time flew by as I worked on my first full-length album since my debut. One day, I was moved by the scene in the movie where Rumi, the main character, courageously revealed her hidden identity. At the time, I felt ashamed of myself for keeping my divorce a secret.

I vowed to myself then that if I ever had the chance to share my deepest feelings, I would confess my divorce without hiding anymore. I wanted to be as courageous as Rumi.”

Her agency added, “Sohyang will continue to focus on her music, and we will fully support her career.” Fans are now rallying behind the singer, praising her bravery and wishing her strength in this new chapter.
