SBS’s investigative program Unanswered Questions will delve into the chilling case of newlywed bride Yoo Hye-young, who was killed by her husband just three months after their wedding. Episode 1,457, airing on August 30 under the title “Faith, Desire, Murder – The Death of Newlywed Yoo Hye-young”, will explore the disturbing motive behind the crime and the hidden truths of the tragedy.
On March 13, at around 2:25 p.m., emergency services received a frantic call from Yoo’s husband claiming, “I think my wife has died.” When paramedics arrived, they found that Yoo, a 35-year-old newlywed, had been dead for several hours. What should have been a joyful newlywed period had ended abruptly in unimaginable tragedy.
Her husband, identified as Mr. Seo, told police that he had returned home late with his wife after a gathering the previous night. He claimed Yoo, who suffered from insomnia, took sleeping pills and went to bed first. Seo said he later joined her and left for work the next morning without waking her. When he could not reach her throughout the day, he returned home only to find her lifeless.
Initial suspicions of foul play grew when investigators discovered bruising on Yoo’s upper lip and red marks around her neck. Although her family initially feared Seo might harm himself out of despair, the situation dramatically changed at her funeral. Detectives called Seo outside and arrested him on the spot for murder. An autopsy revealed clear signs of strangulation, and with no evidence of forced entry, suspicion fell squarely on the husband.
During questioning, Seo initially protested his innocence, but later admitted to killing his wife after she allegedly refused sex and belittled him. The program also obtained suspicious text exchanges between the couple from Yoo’s phone, suggesting deeper marital conflicts.
