Actress Kim Tae-hee has officially stepped into Hollywood with her role in Amazon Prime Video’s new series Butterfly. At a press conference held on August 21 at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul, Kim Tae-hee shared her thoughts on her first global project.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, Butterfly tells the story of former U.S. intelligence agent David Jung (played and produced by Daniel Dae Kim) and the relentless pursuit by Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), an active agent sent to eliminate him. The cast includes both international and Korean stars such as Park Hae-soo, Sung Dong-il, Kim Ji-hoon, Lee Il-hwa, and Kim Na-yoon.

Kim Tae-hee plays Eun-joo, David’s Korean wife. Describing her role, she said: “Eun-joo tries to start a new life in Korea but gets caught up in unexpected events while striving to protect her family. It’s the most ordinary, everyday Korean woman I’ve ever portrayed.”

This marks her first drama since Genie TV and ENA’s Lies Hidden in My Garden (2023) and her long-awaited return after two years. Speaking about why she accepted the project, Kim Tae-hee revealed: “There was no reason to turn it down. The moment I read the script, I was hooked and finished it in one sitting.”

She also admitted her part is not a lead role this time: “Eun-joo doesn’t appear in many scenes — sometimes just one or two per episode. I’ve mostly played main characters who led the entire story, but this time I wanted to support the narrative and add depth. It’s a role I truly value.”

Kim Tae-hee emphasized her motivation for taking on this challenge: “It’s a relatable character. By portraying a Korean woman, if I can show a positive image of Korean women, it would make me proud and honored. I hope viewers enjoy the entire series, not just focus on me. I’d love for people to feel closer to Korea through this drama.”

Reflecting on meeting fans during promotional events, Kim Tae-hee shared: “It’s been such a long time since I met an audience at a theater premiere. I expected some promotional activities for our drama, but I didn’t anticipate this kind of event. Experiencing a wonderful premiere in New York and then being warmly welcomed by fans in Korea touched me deeply. It was a heartwarming and happy moment that made me feel at ease.”

The six-episode series Butterfly will premiere on August 22, airing every Friday and Saturday at 10:40 PM on tvN for Korean audiences, while streaming globally on Amazon Prime Video.
