On the July 25 broadcast of KBS2’s variety show Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant, singer Kim Jaejoong visited his parents’ home, where an unexpected and touching story about his first love came to light.
While checking the refrigerator, Jaejoong was shocked to see it nearly empty. Concerned about his mother’s health and appetite, he promised, “I’ll fill this fridge with side dishes for you,” showing his devoted filial affection.
The visit took a sentimental turn when talk shifted to family and marriage. During the broadcast, Kim shared the news that his niece had recently given birth. Kim’s father smiled, saying, “You’re already a grandpa,” teasing his son. His mother then gently brought up marriage, asking, “Shouldn’t you start thinking about settling down too?”
This prompted Jaejoong to open up: “I did have a real girlfriend,” he admitted, surprising everyone. His mother quickly chimed in with a revelation: “The one who came home, right?” making it clear this wasn’t just a teenage fling.
Jaejoong confirmed, “Yes, we even had a formal family meeting between both sides. But I was really young—just a middle schooler.”
He went on to recall their sweet beginning during Korea’s PC communication era. “We met through online chat, and I traveled from Gongju to Daegu to meet her at an amusement park. That was our first date,” he said, sharing what sounded like a scene from a coming-of-age film.
Although the relationship didn’t last, Jaejoong’s mother warmly added, “She could still reach out,” publicly sending a message to her son’s long-lost love from 20 years ago.
Blushing, Jaejoong laughed it off, saying, “Can we stop talking about marriage now?” But his mom didn’t hold back, “What else can I talk about with a 40-year-old bachelor?”
With playful humor, Jaejoong responded, “I’m not a bachelor yet. Let me just focus on cooking,” drawing laughs from the studio panel. One panelist remarked, “If he cooks this well, his future wife will be lucky,” adding to the fun surrounding the idol’s unexpected romantic revelation.
Meanwhile, with the news of his niece’s childbirth, Kim Jaejoong has jokingly earned the title of “first idol grandpa.”
