A source from the production confirmed on July 23 that Lee Joon Gi will headline the new historical comedy drama, Gyeongbokgung Detective Agency (tentative title), portraying King Hyejong, a sharp-tongued, eccentric ruler who moonlights as a detective.

Set in the flourishing Joseon era, the story follows a king who relentlessly pursues criminal cases and a young, memory-gifted royal inspector who finds herself chasing after him—resulting in a hilariously chaotic dynamic.

Lee’s character, King Hyejong, is described as a flamboyant and domineering monarch whose biting sarcasm and royal entitlement define his daily routine. His unapologetically sharp demeanor has earned him the nickname Po-gok Teacher, a formal twist on “cuckoo,” referencing his constant chatter.

This marks Lee Joon Gi’s first drama role in three years since the 2023 tvN series Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun. During the interim, he held fan meetings across Asia, maintaining strong ties with his international fanbase.

Known as the “undefeated king of historical dramas,” Lee has built a solid reputation through iconic roles in The King and the Clown, Iljimae, Arang and the Magistrate, Gunman in Joseon, Scholar Who Walks the Night, and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. His casting in Gyeongbokgung Detective Agency has already generated high expectations.

The drama will be written by writer So Min Sun and produced by Studio N.
