On June 1st, a video titled “A Human-Faced Fish Is Cute! And After That… NewJeans‘ #Meme-terview” was uploaded to Elle Korea’s YouTube channel. In the video, the group members shared their thoughts while reacting to memes about themselves, particularly focusing on a moment when they felt the absence of their teammate Hyein.
Hyein had previously been unable to participate in some of the group’s content due to an injury. Reflecting on this period, Danielle commented, “Sometimes Hyein acts very mature, but sometimes she acts lovely. I tried hard to express that loveliness.”
When the other members playfully pointed out that Danielle’s imitation was more like herself, she quickly clarified, “I mean, that’s not how I talk.” Minji added to the lighthearted moment with a bemused expression.
Hyein shared her perspective: “When I had to step back and observe NewJeans from a distance, the word ‘happiness’ seemed to define our team best. It was truly a precious time when I felt genuinely happy watching their performances and listening to our music.”
She also revealed a moment that strengthened their bond, saying, “Before going on stage, when we shout ‘Fighting!’, I feel like we truly rely on each other in that brief moment when we look into each other’s eyes and chant together.”
In a lighter part of the interview, Daniel recounted an amusing interaction with singer Lee Mujin. She shared that he had told her, “Danielle is like a mermaid. I’m a human-faced fish.” Danielle’s confusion over the term “human-faced fish” and her cute reaction to it brought laughter to the group and viewers alike.
