Why a Female Idol Chose JYP After Reaching the Final Round at YG

A popular female idol auditioned for the Big 3 Kpop agencies, made it to the final round at YG, but ultimately chose to join JYP.

Former I.O.I member and soloist Chungha recently reminisced about her experience auditioning for the Big 3 Kpop agency. Particularly, on September 28, a video titled “Story of failing SM Entertainment audition (Hyoyeon x Chungha)”  was uploaded on the YouTube channel of Girls’ Generation’s Hyoyeon, “Hyo’s Level Up”.

In the video, Hyoyeon mentions that Chungha auditioned extensively once she decided to pursue a career as an idol. To this, Chungha responded, “I auditioned for JYP, YG, and SM. This is the first time I’m sharing this, but I auditioned for all of them through open auditions.”

Chungha then shared, “I passed JYP, and I made it to the final round at YG”, before adding humorously, “But just before the final round at YG, JYP contacted me with an offer, so I joined JYP because they reached out quickly.

Chungha also recalled her SM audition experience, saying, “At that time, I had no idea about audition culture. I remember there were a lot of posters for Girls’ Generation’s ‘Genie’. I thought they were concert posters, but then I realized it was for an open audition. Out of curiosity, I auditioned.”

According to Chungha, she wasn’t even thinking about learning how to sing and dance properly at the time, and just auditioned during the weekends when she had a break from boarding school.

In the end, Chungha was asked to say, sing, and dance freestyle, but she didn’t even know how to dance, adding that it was her first audition of all time. She eventually went back to boarding school, where she must turn off and hand in her phone to the teacher.

“I knew I wouldn’t get any calls”, the female idol also confessed.

On the other hand, Chungha debuted with the project girl group I.O.I through famous Kpop survival show “Produce 101” in 2016 and later achieved great success as a solo artist with hits like “Gotta Go”, “Roller Coaster”, and “Killing Me”.

After parting ways with her debut agency, MNH Entertainment, she recently signed an exclusive contract with Jay Park’s label, MORE VISION.
