Ji Chang-wook’s 19+ K-drama Faces Intense Criticism

After the first four episodes of “Queen Woo,” critics, viewers, and the Korean media expressed disappointment with the film’s content. According to Ten Asia, the early episodes of “Queen Woo” are “all about sex scenes and cleavage.”

“Explicit sex scenes, lesbian relationships, and exposed breasts are what define ‘Queen Woo.’ The first historical drama from TVING has been released, but it fails to meet expectations. Despite a star-studded cast, including Jeon Jong-seo, Ji Chang-wook, Kim Mu Yeol, and Jung Yu-mi, since its premiere on August 29, ‘Queen Woo’ has faced intense criticism, and ultimately, it is the R-rated sex scenes that have drawn the most attention,” Ten Asia wrote.

Ten Asia also criticized the film for failing to build compelling power dynamics, instead resorting to meaningless sex scenes to capture attention.

According to Ten Asia, actress Jeon Jong-seo plays Queen Woo Hee of Goguryeo, the sole main character of the film. After the king’s death, Queen Woo leaves the palace to select the next king and place him on the throne, ensuring her position as queen. She is portrayed as a strong and decisive female character.

However, “Queen Woo” has been criticized for focusing too much on bedroom scenes instead of properly developing the image of a strong, powerful queen.

Korean media suggest that if “Queen Woo” had focused more on these aspects, it could have been a groundbreaking historical drama centered around women. Jeon Jong-seo could have succeeded in creating an unprecedented queen character who personally chooses the king.

“But ‘Queen Woo,’ at least in the episodes released so far, has distracted viewers from the queen. Except for episode 3, each remaining episode contains nudity and sex scenes. Unlike typical historical dramas, ‘Queen Woo’ includes prolonged and close-up nudity scenes,” Ten Asia emphasized.

Earlier, actress Jung Yu-mi mentioned feeling pressured about her same-sex intimate scene. Jung Yu-mi admitted that she felt burdened by the revealing and bold scenes but believed they were necessary for developing the storyline. In contrast, Ten Asia argued that the sex scenes in the film were excessive.

Over the past few days, the film has been heavily criticized. Viewers argue that the scenes in the film are too explicit and unnecessary, even though “Queen Woo” is rated 19+.

On the other hand, “Queen Woo” revolves around Queen Woo Hee, portrayed by Jeon Jong-seo, and her efforts to protect her tribe and the throne. After King Go Nam-mu (Ji Chang-wook) suddenly dies from poisoning by Woo Sun, Queen Woo Hee faces a fierce battle between tribes for power.

The film stars Jeon Jong-seo, Kim Mu-yeol, Ji Chang-wook, Jung Yu-mi, Lee Soo-hyuk, and Park Ji-hwan, among others.
