“Veteran 2” is a sequel to the 2015 film “Veteran”, which became a box office hit by attracting 13.41 million viewers. Confirming its release date targeting the Chuseok holiday, “Veteran 2” literally has no competitors in theaters. Therefore, high expectations for the movie to be as successful as the previous season.
Will “Veteran 2” become a box office hit movie this year?
This year’s Chuseok holiday will last for five days from the 14th to the 18th of September. “Veteran 2” will premiere on September 13th, one day before the Chuseok holiday. Since no Korean commercial movie has confirmed release in this period, “Veteran 2” is expected to dominate the theaters this Chuseok.
Although Chuseok is normally the peak season for movies, the absence of other film releases is also due to the pressure from competition with “Veteran 2”. Movie industry insiders shared, “A lot of films challenged the Chuseok competition and ended up failing so many producers are trying to avoid the peak season”, adding “It would not be easy for another blockbuster to join the Chuseok competition”.
This situation reminds many of when “The Roundup: Punishment” premiered in the first half of this year. Released on April 24th, during Culture Day when there were discounts for movie tickets, “The Roundup: Punishment” received positive responses and benefited from Labor Day (May 1st) and Children’s Day (May 4th ~ 6th). Without competitors, “The Roundup: Punishment” easily attracted 10 million viewers following Seasons 2 and 3.
The rival of “Veteran 2” is “Veteran”
As expectations for “Veteran 2” are increasing, the movie’s mission is to surpass the impressive achievements of the previous season, “Veteran”.
Depicting the story of detectives punishing problematic chaebols who exploit the vulnerable, “Veteran’ not only provides exciting action scenes but also portrays social issues in detail.
Director Ryu Seung-wan confessed, “Since the release of ‘Veteran’ in 2015, I’ve consistently thought about making a sequel. The idea of this project has been in my mind for nine years”, stimulating fans’ anticipation for new stories.
Meanwhile, “Veteran 2” will premiere on Friday, following “Hijack 1971” and “Project Silence”. Due to the unusual plan of a Friday movie premiere, “Hijack 1971” attracted only 1.77 million viewers, and “Project Silence” ended with a poor performance of 680,000 viewers. As such, attention is focused on whether “Veteran 2” will overcome this and achieve different results.
