On July 25th, Soyeon’s photoshoot was unveiled, capturing attention with her intense gaze and bold poses, effortlessly pulling off a cool chic style like a professional model. Despite her small stature, Soyeon exuded a model-like presence, earning enthusiastic responses from the staff on set.
As the leader and producer of (G)I-DLE, who continues to create hit songs, Soyeon describes herself as “ordinary” as a creator. She says, “I think everyone has similar intuition. Trends emerge because we all have similar thoughts and desires at certain times. I’m just one of those ordinary people. I’m not as niche as you might think (laughs).” When asked about appealing to the public, she clarified, “One common misconception is that I’m trying to convey some profound personal philosophy or worldview. But really, I just want to provide entertainment. Life can be boring, tough, and frustrating at times. I just want to offer something enjoyable to the public as an entertainer.” Soyeon answered professionally with a witty remark.
Soyeon also expressed her attachment to their current summer song, “Klaxon.” She explained, “Klaxon is a metaphor for expressing my feelings loudly. It’s a song where I shout out, ‘Let the car leave, I love you baby.’ I find the protagonist of ‘Klaxon’ very charming. She’s honest to the point where people might think, ‘What’s wrong with her?’ She might not be popular with guys, and some might find her weird or ‘cringy.’ Imagine a girl with spiky short hair, wearing a sleeveless top and jeans that show a bit of her belly, driving an old convertible. When writing lyrics, I think about what the protagonist of the song is wearing and what kind of car they drive. I find characters who are honest about their feelings and want to show their true selves lovable, even if they’re not pretty or successful.”
When asked who she considers “fearless” and strong, Soyeon mentioned her fellow member, Miyeon. “Miyeon doesn’t get lost in deep thoughts or worry about things she doesn’t know or that haven’t happened yet. I think such people are very strong. I feel the most stable when I’m with such people. That’s why I feel so stable when I’m with Miyeon.” When asked if she considers herself strong, Soyeon laughed and said, “I’m totally weak. I have so much imagination that I get scared easily.”
For Soyeon, “fun” means having a good conversation with someone compatible. “I always need dopamine, and just sitting and talking can make the time enjoyable. I think it’s the most important thing in the world. You can get comfort, experience things indirectly that you haven’t done yourself…. Whether it’s a friend, a senior, or a junior, you should really cherish someone you can have good conversations with (laughs).”
Lastly, when the interviewer expressed a wish for (G)I-DLE to continue performing even when they’re grandmothers, Soyeon cheerfully replied, “I want to do (G)I-DLE until I die. I want to show a variety of music that makes people think, ‘Are they really doing this too?’ Who knows, maybe we’ll do trot music someday!” and laughed heartily.
