NewJeans Ignored “Alleged Copycat Group” ILLIT on Stage?
An awkward moment between NewJeans and ILLIT, the girl group accused of copying NewJeans, has drawn attention.
Recently, the grand summer music festival SBS Gayo Daejeon Summer 2024 took place, featuring a lineup of the hottest new generation names such as NewJeans, LE SSERAFIM, Stray Kids, ENHYPEN, NCT, ILLIT, (G)I-DLE, and more. The stars delivered spectacular performances that Kpop fans couldn’t ignore. Additionally, interactions between top idols sparked widespread discussion.
Of particular note was the rare occasion where all three “sister” girl groups under HYBE, including NewJeans, LE SSERAFIM, and ILLIT, shared the stage. A video capturing the moment NewJeans encountered ILLIT is currently circulating on social media. Since ILLIT’s debut at the end of March this year, this was the first time the group was seen in the same frame as NewJeans.
On the SBS Gayo Daejeon Summer 2024 stage, NewJeans and ILLIT finally interacted. However, the awkward atmosphere has led to much controversy. Many netizens pointed out that ILLIT bowed to NewJeans but was allegedly ignored by their seniors.
This moment has drawn significant attention from Kpop fans due to the complex relationship between the two groups. ILLIT was the cause of a “major war” between HYBE and Min Hee Jin. Being labeled as a “copycat group” by the “mother” of NewJeans, ILLIT has struggled recently and faced a wave of online hate.
So far, some fans have defended NewJeans against the “ignoring ILLIT” allegations, stating that it’s likely the girl group simply failed to see ILLIT amid the various streams of people on stage.
