The new episode of tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block” on May 22nd featured actor Byun Woo-seok, who is starring in the drama “Lovely Runner”, as a guest.
On the broadcast, Byun Woo-seok said, “My parents opposed my decision to become a model. At that time, the company I joined held a contest, and if I won a prize, my parents would let me apply. I was lucky enough to win a prize so they started to support me from then on.”
Yoo Jae-suk exclaimed, “While doing model activities, you didn’t earn much money and still had to receive financial support from your family. However, you worked hard as a model and your parents back”. Byun Woo-seok firmly shared, “It was not like I told them to support me financially. I said, ‘I’ll pay back. I’ll do it after I succeed’. Hearing that, my parents supported me knowing that was what their son wanted”.
Recalling the past, Byun Woo-seok said, “Our family had a lot of debts and there were moments when we had financial problems. That’s why it wasn’t easy to tell them what I wanted to do and ask them to support me. While working as a model, I happened to do big projects and make money. I paid off the debts my parents had. I don’t know how to describe their expressions at that time. I think it was the first time I saw such expressions from them. I think I made the right choice.”
Yoo Jae-suk then commented, “I heard Woo-seok’s goal is to succeed and get a house, right?”. In response, Byun Woo-seok said, “Our house is a little small. The laundry is on the first floor and the stairs were very steep. It’s a narrow two-story house. I used to live with my grandmother, but she always had to go up the stairs and it was very uncomfortable because snow piled up there in winter. Seeing that, I thought I wanted my family to live in a comfortable house rather than a good one.”
Yoo Jae-suk said, “You must have a very special relationship with your grandmother. Your drama is doing well, I guess you think about her a lot”. Byun Woo-seok said, “I shared the room with my grandmother and we slept together. That’s why I felt so sorry. I feel sorry when I can’t think of her because I’m busy, then I will often think about her once or twice out of a sudden. I want to think of her every day. I have many memories with my grandmother”.
The actor confessed, “There was only one TV so I always fought with my grandmother because she wanted to watch ‘National Singing Contest’ but I wanted to watch something else. At some point, my grandmother got injured and it worsened as she got older. My parents called me and said, ‘I think she needs to go to the hospital’ and I went there. I was a high school senior and was preparing for the university entrance exam back then so I was a little tired. I saw my grandmother and told her that I would sleep a little bit in the car. As soon as I got off the elevator, I received a call. My grandmother passed away.”
He shed tears after saying, “The moment I decided to make a decision for my comfort when I could spend more time seeing her and being in the same space with her was the most regrettable moment for me. I think grandmother is still by my side. I’m very lucky in everything I do”.
Byun Woo-seok shared, “I’m so lucky to have come this far and I believe my grandmother is always supporting me. I really think so.”
