70-billion-won Netflix Blockbuster Loses to “Culinary Class War”

A Netflix K-drama which cost 70 billion won to make has lost to “Culinary Class War” in popularity, ranking second.

Netflix’s “Culinary Class War” recorded 4.9 million views (calculated by dividing the total watch time by the show’s running time) from September 23 to 29, ranking first in the non-English TV series category.

Since its release, “Culinary Class War” has gained significant attention, not only in Korea but also in Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, reaching the top 10 in 28 countries worldwide.

Culinary Class War

New episodes of “Culinary Class War” are released every Tuesday, and each week it consistently ranks first in popularity, proving its immense appeal. The growing interest in the chefs featured on the show has even led to large crowds flocking to their restaurants.

Meanwhile, “Gyeongseong Creature” Season 2, released on Netflix on September 27, recorded 3.1 million views, placing second. The timing of its release overlapping with “Culinary Class War” caused it to rank second in the global non-English TV series category.

Despite its star-studded cast, including Han So-hee and Park Seo-joon, and a hefty production budget of 70 billion won (approx 52 million USD), the performance of “Gyeongseong Creature” is considered somewhat underwhelming.

Meanwhile, in an interview on September 30, director Jeong Dong-yoon of “Gyeongseong Creature” Season 2 addressed the situation, saying, “There’s no resentment towards ‘Culinary Class War’ because the genres are different. I enjoyed watching it myself. I hope both do well, and I don’t focus too much on rankings.”

On the other hand, “Culinary Class War” is a survival variety show that depicts an intense culinary battle between skilled “underdog” chefs, known for their excellent cooking, and the top “elite” star chefs of Korea. Featuring famous chefs like Choi Hyun-seok, Choi Kang-rok, Jeong Ji-seon, Yeoh Kyung-rae, and Ahn Yu-seong, the show has gained significant attention. Culinary experts Baek Jong-won and Ahn Seong-jae appear as judges, adding dramatic flair.

Netflix’s “Gyeongseong Creature” Season 2, starring Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee, tells the story of Chae-ok (Han So-hee) and Ho-jae (Park Seo-joon) as they fight to end a long-standing feud that spans from Gyeongseong to Seoul, 79 years after the events of Season 1.
