6 K-dramas premiering in July 2023, expected to captivate audiences  

The K-drama lineup for the month of July 2023, has been unveiled, with various notable titles and highly-anticipated sequels.

2023 marks a turning point with broadcasting companies having prepared to release new dramas accordingly. From sequels to popular K-dramas, to adaptations of famous webtoons, July will welcome the return of various top stars. Let’s take a look at the dramas currently airing or scheduled to air this month.

1. Shadow Detective 2

The Disney+ drama “Shadow Detective 2” is a sequel to “Shadow Detective”, which aired in October last year. It tells the story of Kim Taek Rok (Lee Sung Min), a 30-year veteran detective known for his exceptional intuition and skills, who is transferred to the Women and Juvenile Division as he approaches retirement.

The highlight of the drama is the scene where Lee Seong Ah (Kyung Soo Jin), a cherished junior who Kim Taek Rok worries about after retirement, returns to her old self after an accident.

“Shadow Detective 2” premiered on July 5th and is being released on Disney+ with two episodes every Wednesday at 4 PM (KST). It consists of a total of 8 episodes.

2. Not Others

The ENA Monday-Tuesday drama “Not Others” is adapted from a popular webtoon of the same name. It depicts the love and family affection between a clumsy mother and her cool daughter, and stars actors Jeon Hye Jin, Choi Soo Young, Ahn Jae Wook, and Park Sung Hoon, among others.

In “Not Others”, Jeon Hye Jin assumes the role of Kim Eun Mi, an unmarried mother with a 29-year-old daughter, who is still pretty and bubbly and working as a physical therapist. Meanwhile, Choi Soo Young plays Kim Jin Hee, Kim Eun Mi’s daughter, who is a patrol team leader whose priority is clamping down on minor violations rather than solving cases.

In addition, Ahn Jae Wook will transform into Park Jin Hong, a mysterious man who appears in front of Kim Eun Mi, while Park Sung Hoon plays Eun Jae Won, a police station chief in Nammun Village whose life is twisted after meeting Seo Jin Hee at the police station. 

“Not Others” is set to premiere on July 17th on genie TV, genie TV Mobile, and ENA, following the drama “Lies Hidden in My Garden”, which features Kim Tae Hee and Lim Ji Yeon as the leading cast members.

3. D.P. 2

D.P. 2” is a sequel to the 2021 Netflix original series “D.P.” The previous season portrayed the story of a team of Korean military police, whose mission is to catch deserters. Here, Ahn Joon Ho (Jung Hae In) and Han Ho Yeol (Koo Kyo Hwan) chase after individuals with various stories, facing the realities they were unaware of. The series received acclaim for effectively depicting the pain of soldiers that previous works failed to capture, and even won Best Drama at the 58th Baeksang Arts Awards.

D.P. 2

On July 11th, Netflix unveiled character stills from “D.P. 2.” The released stills capture moments of changing emotions for Private Ahn Joon Ho, who wears the rank insignia of a private first class, Sergeant Han Ho Yeol, who has been promoted to corporal, Staff Sergeant Park Bum Goo (Kim Sung Kyun), Lieutenant Lim Ji Seob (Son Seok Gu), as well as the newly joined Major Gu Ja Woon (Ji Jin Hee) from the Army Headquarters, and Lieutenant Colonel Seo Eun (Kim Ji Hyun). The addition of new characters increases curiosity about the direction of the story.

“D.P. 2” will be available on Netflix starting from July 28th.

5. The Uncanny Counter 2

The tvN Saturday-Sunday drama “The Uncanny Counter 2: Counter Punch” (hereafter referred to as “The Uncanny Counter 2”) is a sequel to the fantasy-action drama “The Uncanny Counter”, in which demon hunters called “counters” disguised as employees of a Korean noodle restaurant.

Season 2 of “The Uncanny Counter” features returning cast members Jo Byung Gyu, Yoo Jun Sang, Kim Se Jeong, Yeom Hye Ran, Ahn Seok Hwan, as well as new additions Jin Sun Kyu, Kang Ki Young, Kim Hieora, and Yoo In Soo. In particular, actor Jo Byung Gyu, who took a break from his acting career due to school violence allegations in 2021, is making his return after two years, adding a special meaning to the drama.

6. My Lovely Liar

The tvN Monday-Tuesday drama “My Lovely Liar” (previously known as “Useless Lies”) tells the story of Mok Sol Hee (Kim So Hyun), who can hear lies and thus cannot trust people, and Kim Do Ha (Hwang Min Hyun), a genius composer with a hidden identity.
