3 Reasons to watch new rom-com legal drama “The Law Coffee” starring Lee Seung Gi and Lee Se Young
A laugh-inducing romance weaved with legal battles and thrilling adventure against the powerful.
“The Law Coffee”: A combination of romance and law
The law cafe revolves around Kim Jung Ho (Lee Seung Gi) and Kim Yu Ri (Lee Se Young). Kim Jung Ho is a guy who owns two houses, of which Kim Yu Ri is a tenant to open a law cafe – a place where customers come for a cup of coffee and legal advice.
The two were once long-term friends and dated in high school until, one day, Jung Ho broke up with Yu Ri and disappeared from her life completely without trace.
However, Jung Ho is not a certified “bad boy” who likes to play around. On the contrary, he still has feelings for Yu Ri through all those years. Yu Ri also sparks old feelings when the comes across Jung Ho again.
While Jung Ho cares for Yu Ri greatly, he tries to deny his own feelings. It traces back to a fatal accident that causes Yu Ri’s father his life and it was seemingly Jung Ho’s father that prevented the truth from coming out. Jung Ho was in pain and anger to learn of the fact, leading to his farewell to Yu Ri.
At present, Jung Ho still secretly looks to the bottom of the unfortunate event. At the same time, Yu Ri and him form a duo to resolve the legal cases from their customers. From this strange and unexpected reunion, the two reignites a romantic relationship once again.
Bright and filled with laughter
While appearing to be quite dramatic at first glance, the series is a romantic-comedy drama. Hence “The Law Coffee” still takes on a lighter tone to the overall story. It’s because the series is not involved solely in investigations or court battles, but it also tells the romance between the two main characters and the funny moments between them.
In addition to the bickering between the main couple, the supporting characters also play an important role in helping the legal elements to be easier to digest. They are the two neighboring aunts who enjoy the sight of Jung Ho and Yu Ri’s “friendly banter”, the director of a law firm who is happy to see Yu Ri quit or the employee with a lively personality in the law coffee.
Versatile acting performance of the main leads Lee Seung Gi and Lee Se Young
“A Korean Odyssey”, “Vagabond” and “Mouse” are his most recent blockbusters where the actor transformed into various characters. In these works, the 35-year-old actor turns into modern-day Son Oh-Gong, a stuntman caught up in the mysterious doings of the National Intelligence Service and a murderer in disguise as a whole-hearted rookie police officer.
These are all characters that have their own charm and carry a strong sense of action-film character. On the other hand, in “The Law Cafe”, Lee Seung Gi’s character Kim Jung Ho brings a more intimate image to the viewers.
Kim Jung Ho is a guy who likes sportswear, writes novels at home, enjoys chatting with his neighbors in his spare time and carries a range of emotions for someone in love. At the same time, he struggles with shadows of his past and is quietly confronting the elites to make them pay for their sins.
On the other hand, Kim Yu Ri played by Lee Se Young is a beautiful female lawyer but can be ill-tempered at times. With the desire to protect the disadvantaged in society and help solve legal problems with the price of a cup of coffee, Kim Yu Ri opens a law cafe. While her front is a resilient and strong woman, Kim Yu Ri has her moments of weakness. She is still haunted and tormented by the death of her father.
Obviously, it is not easy to fully portray these two characters. Besides the moments of “happy life – healthy life”, they also have moments of hurt and pain when the past rushes back. However, both Lee Seung Gi and Lee Se Young are real actors and they showed their impressive acting in the first episodes of the drama.
It comes as no surprise to fully capture their whole story in the first few episodes. Apart from their happy and lively moments, the characters have their share of vulnerability when memories of the past come rushing in. However, Lee Seung Gi and Lee Se Young are capable actors, showing impressive acting in several aired episodes.
A romantic and comedic drama that touches upon legal issues and a plotline of going against the powerful without being too mind-twisting are the perfect words to sum up “The Law Coffee”. Complemented by the amazing chemistry between Lee Seung Gi and Lee Se Young, the drama is a highly anticipated series that promises to attain “explosive” success.
