Two men who impersonated delivery drivers to illegally obtain home addresses and other information of famous idol singers from SM Entertainment have been fined in the first trial.

In particular, Judge Lee Ho-dong of the Seoul Eastern District Court’s Criminal Division 3 sentenced 2 men called Park and Kim to a fine of 3 million won (approx 2000 USD) each on the 3rd for violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.

Park and Kim, who were acquainted through a voice chat platform on social media (SNS), were accused of contacting SM Entertainment idol singers under the guise of delivery drivers in April of last year to illegally gather the idols’ addresses and other information.

Specifically, they gathered at Kim’s house in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, and contacted the idol singers using their own phones. They deceived the victims by saying things like, “A package has arrived but the unit number is not written,” or “It only says ‘○○ (product name)’ on the package. Didn’t you order this?” By pretending to know partial information, they tricked the victims into revealing their addresses.

The victims included 3 members of NCT and 1 member of EXO.

Regarding the reason for the sentencing, judge Lee said, “The defendants conspired to deceive the victims, who are active as celebrities and singers, by pretending to be delivery drivers and luring them into providing information under false pretenses. Their actions constitute a violation of the Information and Communications Network Act, and thus each is fined 3 million won.”
