2NE1’s Comeback: Is it Enough to Save YG?

The comeback of 2NE1 after almost a decade is highly-anticipated, but is it enough to save YG from its current ruins?

Recently, YG Entertainment announced that 2NE1 will be holding a liveshow in Seoul on October 5 and 6.

According to the announcement, the show’s name is “Welcome Back,” symbolizing the return of the second-generation girl group. This will be 2NE1’s first live show since YG suddenly disbanded the group in 2016.

Since their surprise performance at Coachella 2022, 2NE1 has proven their lasting dominance in the K-pop industry, leaving a deep impression on the global stage. Therefore, ticket demands surged immediately after YG’s official announcement about the live show. After these two performances, 2NE1 will embark on a global tour that will run until 2025.

With 2NE1’s return, YG becomes one of the rare companies that still manages girl groups from three different generations: 2NE1 (2nd gen), BLACKPINK (3rd gen), and BABYMONSTER (5th gen). While this may excite some fans, there are also concerns about the company’s growth.

Previously, reports revealed that YG’s operating profits in the second quarter of this year fell by 98.9% compared to the same period last year. The primary reason was the absence of their top groups, BIGBANG and BLACKPINK, leavivng a gap was too large for a rookie group like BABYMONSTER to fill.

As a result, YG Entertainment seems to have decided to turn to artists they had previously let go, like 2NE1. This move is seen as a desperate attempt to overcome the current downturn.

The question arises: can 2NE1 single-handedly save the company? Their upcoming return will not only be filled with anticipation but also significant pressure on the group. A positive sign is that most 2NE1 members, especially CL, have received global admiration. Fans hope that 2NE1 will be able to lay a solid foundation for YG Entertainment’s recovery.
