Despite the devastating fire that broke out in a 32-story residential tower at Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court on November 26, the 2025 MAMA Awards proceeded on November 28 at Kai Tak Stadium but with a drastically different tone. Instead of MAMA’s signature explosive stages, the ceremony embraced solemnity, comfort, and solidarity.
Marking its first return to Hong Kong in seven years, the long-running K-pop awards show transformed its usual high-energy production into a night dedicated to remembrance and healing.
A Ceremony Stripped of Extravagance Led by Park Bo-gum’s Tribute
Host Park Bo-gum opened the event wearing a muted suit and a black ribbon, bowing his head in tribute.
“A heartbreaking accident has occurred,” he said. “We offer our deepest condolences to those who lost precious lives, families, and friends. We sincerely hope no further harm occurs. Believing in music’s healing and unifying power, we wish to offer comfort, hope, and the strength to move forward.”

His tone set the atmosphere for the entire night.
All presenters and artists followed suit, choosing black outfits and refraining from celebratory reactions. Even award recipients walked to the stage quietly, embodying respect for the victims and the gravity of the tragedy.
No Fireworks, No Pyrotechnics – Silence Instead of Spectacle
For the first time in many years, the MAMA stage featured no fireworks, flames, or explosive effects. Out of respect for the fire tragedy, the production team replaced all high-risk effects with lasers and minimalist visuals.

The audience also participated in the tribute, holding back loud cheers and joining the somber atmosphere.
Artists Modify Lyrics to Deliver Comfort
One of the most striking gestures came from performers who deliberately altered their lyrics to avoid words reminiscent of fire or danger.
Group MEOVV changed the lyrics of “TURN IT UP” for the MAMA version. The original line “Run to you, 숨이 멈춰도 돼” (“Even if I lose my breath”) was changed to “끝이 없어도 돼” (“It doesn’t matter if there’s no end”).

Other phrases such as “Got me burning up” and “heating up” were replaced with “turn it up” and “say what” to prevent discomfort for attendees affected by the tragedy.
These thoughtful adjustments were widely praised as a respectful and mindful artistic choice.
“Support Hongkong” – MAMA Extends Solidarity Through Donations
The 2025 MAMA Awards incorporated the message “Support Hongkong” throughout the event, offering moments of collective mourning.
Led by Park Bo-gum, attendees observed a moment of silence. Prior to the ceremony, MAMA announced a donation of 20 million Hong Kong dollars (approx. 3.78 billion KRW) to support victims of the fire.
In an official Weibo statement, the organizers expressed condolences: “We offer our deepest sympathies and heartfelt comfort to all affected by the fire. We hope this donation can support rescue operations and follow-up assistance, and that the affected area may regain stability and peace as soon as possible.”

Every stage, speech, and gesture emphasized compassion over spectacle transforming MAMA into a platform of healing.
By delivering comfort instead of celebration, the 2025 MAMA Awards showcased the dignity and responsibility of one of K-pop’s most influential global events.

Through toned-down visuals, thoughtful performances, and heartfelt messages, the ceremony honored those affected by the tragedy while sharing encouragement with viewers worldwide.
