The summer 2024 anime lineup features a diverse range of titles, including adaptations of major hits, sequels to popular series, and even original works. Among these, which ones are catching the most attention from Anime! Anime! readers?
To find out, Anime! Anime! conducted a reader survey titled “Which Summer 2024 Anime Are You Most Excited About?” The survey ran from June 4 to June 9 and received responses from 188 people. The gender distribution was approximately 40% male, 55% female, with about 5% not specifying their gender, indicating a slight female majority. The age distribution showed around 35% were under 19 years old and about 20% were in their 20s, with the majority being younger viewers.
Tops the List with a Triple Score!
1st Place
The top position goes to “My Favorite Idol” (Season 2), with a support rate of approximately 29%.
“My Favorite Idol” is based on the manga serialized in “Weekly Young Jump.” The story follows Goro, an obstetrician who reincarnates as Aqua, the child of his favorite idol, Hoshino Ai. The sequel continues from the 2023 first season, depicting the events of Aqua and others as they take part in the 2.5D stage play “Tokyo Blade.”
Comments from fans include: “I’m curious about how the stage of Aqua, Kanata Arima, and Akane Kurokawa will turn out! There are still many mysteries to be revealed, so I can’t wait for the broadcast,” and “The first season ended with such intriguing cliffhangers that I ended up binge-watching it. This year, with dramas and live-action movies too, it’s shaping up to be an exciting year.” There’s also excitement for the music, with readers noting, “The OP theme by YOASOBI’s ‘Idol’ was a hit, so I’m looking forward to the artist!” The OP theme for the new season has been set as GEMN’s “Fatal,” and the use of an unknown artist has also become a topic of discussion.
2nd Place
In second place is “Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian.” It has a support rate of about 8%.
“Sometimes the Neighbor Arya-san Gets Flirty in Russian” is based on the novel published by Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko. The story is a youth romantic comedy featuring Arya, also known as Arisa Mikhailovna Kujo, who has a Russian father and Japanese mother, and the protagonist, Masachika Kuze, who has native-level Russian listening skills.
Fans have commented: “Sumire Uesaka, who voices Arya, is from the Russian language department! I’m excited to hear her Russian,” and “The production company is Doga Kobo, and the character designer is Yuhei Murota, who has worked on several idol-themed projects, so there’s a high level of trust. The original story is interesting, and all the characters are cute, making it my top pick for the upcoming season.”
3rd Place
Third place is shared by “Kinnikuman Perfect Origin Arc” and “The Elusive Samurai” Both have a support rate of about 6%.
“Kinnikuman Perfect Origin Arc” is the latest installment in the hugely popular series that took the world by storm. Comments include: “The anime adaptation is highly anticipated! The new cast and style match perfectly, and I’m thrilled to enjoy a new Kinnikuman anime in the Reiwa era,” and “Mamoru Miyano has nailed the role of Kinnikuman, inheriting from Akira Kamiya. Casting Kamiya as Kinnikuman’s father, Kinnikuman Mayumi, and as Master Prince Kamehame is a nice touch.” This shows strong support from long-time fans.
“The Elusive Samurai” is based on the historical manga serialized in “Weekly Shonen Jump.” It depicts the life of the protagonist, Hojo Tokiyuki, who survives by fleeing in a transitioning era from Kamakura to Muromachi. Fans have commented: “As a history enthusiast, I’m excited to check out this anime. With many battle scenes, it seems like it will be action-packed,” and “The original is by Yusei Matsui of ‘Assassination Classroom,’ so I’m looking forward to it.”
