“Queen of Tears” ending: There’s an answer in writer Park Ji-eun’s previous works

tvN's "Queen of Tears", with only two episodes left until its conclusion, is captivating viewers

The protagonist Hong Hae-in (played by Kim Ji-won) receiving surgery and developing amnesia in episode 14 received criticism for its frustrating development, but the remaining two episodes are drawing attention to how Baek Hyun-woo (played by Kim Soo-hyun) and Hong Hae-in will overcome the crisis.

Netizens are paying attention to writer Park Ji-eun’s previous works. Writer Park has a history of planting clues for the endings in her works.

In SBS’s “My Love from the Star” (2013), plants were a major clue. In the drama, Do Min-joon (played by Kim Soo-hyun) and Cheon Song-yi (played by Jun Ji-hyun) discover a conjoined tree on an island, hinting at the coexistence of the alien Do Min-joon and the earthling Cheon Song-yi.

Additionally, the plant Do Min-joon grows reflects his health condition, providing a clue for deduction.

In KBS2’s “The Producers” (2015), the keyword was “penalty shootout”. In the epilogue, Ra Joon-mo (played by Cha Tae-hyun) blocks a shot from Baek Seung-chan (played by Kim Soo-hyun), hinting at a connection between Ra Joon-mo and Tak Ye-jin (played by Gong Hyo-jin). The drama ended with the happy ending of the Ra Joon-mo and Tak Ye-jin couple, as speculated by netizens.

Like writer Park’s previous works, “Queen of Tears” also provides clues through foreshadowing for a predicted happy ending.

The first foreshadowing involves “first snow” and “balsam leaves”. In episode 13, Hae-in dyes her nails with balsam leaves because of the legend that goes: if one’s nails are still colored by the first snow of the season, their first love will come true.

In episode 14, with Hae-in’s first love revealed to be Baek Hyun-woo, the first snow falls in Germany, and Hae-in is seen checking the balsam leaves outside the window. Netizens anticipated a happy ending despite Hae-in losing her memory.

The second foreshadowing revolves around a painting in Hae-in’s room. An art work analysis YouTuber mentioned a long horizontal line in the painting by artist Jeon Eun-suk, suggesting it reflects Hae-in’s hazy and hallucinatory situation. Speculation arose that the drama might have a happy ending based on the bright and vivid colors of the painting.

There’s also speculation about a happy ending due to “pregnancy”. In episode 11, Hae-in mentions her white blood cell count increased to her family. Normally, pregnant women’s white blood cell counts are known to increase up to 2~3 times. This enabled Hae-in to undergo surgery in Germany.

Netizens speculate that the mulberries Aunt Hong Beom-ja’s (played by Kim Jung-nan) received from Young-sung (played by Kim Young-min) had an effect, or that Hae-in might be pregnant. Some netizens predicted that the couple who once had a miscarriage would get a new life.

“Queen of Tears” is closely following tvN’s highest-rated drama “Crash Landing on You”, which recorded a 21.7% viewership rating (Nielsen Korea, nationwide paid households). There is now keen interest in whether the remaining two episodes can surpass the record set by “Crash Landing on You”.
