Netizens are curious about why Um Ki-joon and Lee Ji-ah, the ‘hard carry’ of “Penthouse” ratings, didn’t attend the 2021 SBS Drama Awards

Several main character actors who contributed to the high ratings of hit drama “Penthouse” ended up being absent from the 2021 SBS Drama Awards.

The 2021 SBS Drama Awards was held at SBS Prism Tower in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul o,n the evening of December 31st. On this day, members of the “Penthouse” series proved their popularity by winning the Rookie of the Year Award (Kim Young-dae, Han Ji-hyun, Choi Ye-bin) and the Achievement Award (Kim Soon-ok). Especially, the Daesang (grand prize) went to Kim So-yeon, who portrayed the best character of her life Cheon Seo-jin.

However, Um Ki-joon and Lee Ji-ah, who impressed their viewers by playing important characters in the “Penthouse” series, were the only members who didn’t attend the awards ceremony, causing fans to show their disappointment.

Um Ki-joon received favorable reviews from audiences for her role of the greatest villain of all time in “Penthouse” Ju Dan-tae. In particular, the fact that he unexpectedly received huge love despite playing a villain caught the attention of everyone.

Playing two roles (Shim Soo-ryeon and Na Ae-gyo) at the same time, Lee Ji-ah was highly praised for her delicate expressions when performing each character. Therefore, Lee Ji-ah enjoyed the 2nd heyday in her acting career after appearing in the “Penthouse” series and charted high in the list of actor brand reputation rankings.

Thanks to their enthusiastic performances, “Penthouse 3” was able to end with a rating of 19.1% in the Seoul metropolitan area and a highest real-time rating of 21.6%, according to the rating survey company Nielsen Korea.

What made the viewers even more disappointed was that the 2021 SBS Drama Awards had too many categories with co-winners and got called an “award-sharing ceremony”. In fact, the 2021 SBS Drama Awards gave the Rookie of the Year award to a total of 6 actors, including Kim Young-dae, Choi Hyun-wook, Son Sang-yeon, Han Ji-hyun, Choi Ye-bin, and Noh Jeong-eui.

In response, fans poured out complaints as they didn’t understand why the main character actors of “Penthouse”, which showed outstanding achievements in terms of hot topics, ratings, and acting skills, were absent from the awards ceremony and why the awards were distributed to so many actors.
