Why Hyeri can but Jisoo cannot? A “disaster” caused by YG’s misjudgment

As soon as the first and second episodes of her drama were aired, Jisoo got criticized for her “poor acting.” On the other hand, Hyeri is poised to continue her enthusiasm for historical dramas in the home theater with a 7% viewer rating.

Why Hyeri can but Jisoo cannot

▶ Jisoo who changed nothing but her outfit in the 2000s vs. Hyeri – the Joseon’s multi-job freelancer born in the 1700s.

In JTBC’s Friday-Saturday drama “Snowdrop,” Ji-soo emerged as an icon of “bad acting” as soon as the first episode went on air. Of course, she’s pretty and eye-catching, but the problem is that she only looks pretty. It feels like she is totally out of place comparing to her acting partner Jung Hae-in, the same at the dorm where she seems like she is playing alone amidst her college friends. On top of that, her inaccurate pronunciation and poor training cut off the drama flow which should be serious. Her pronunciation was bad to the extent that her name Eun Yeong-ro in the play sounds like Eu Nyeon-ro.

In fact, Hyeri‘s pronunciation is not very accurate either. Most former idols are pointed out for their pronunciation problems in their early days of acting. However, in the case of Hyeri, she has chosen a character that she can do well and plays as much as she wants. She also has a pioneering view of selecting works that fit her well, such as “Reply 1988,” which are relatively less burdensome to her but she can still gain experience from those.

The same goes for KBS2’s “Moonshine,” which started its first broadcast on Dec 20th. In this drama, Hyeri enters the liquor smuggling business by playing the role of Kang Ro-seo, a daughter and the breadwinner of a broke aristocrat family. Thanks to her acting where she throws away her whole body without hesitating about her image, she made the audience laugh. No matter how fusion historical drama is, the setting of a young daughter of an aristocrat family of the Joseon Dynasty does all kinds of chores and rolls in a dirt pit for a penny could seem awkward. However, thanks to Hyeri’s acting, the unique character Ro-seo is cute and fun enough.

▶ Misjudgement caused by excessive greed vs Smart choice that maximizes strengths

At the moment, many people voiced criticisms, mentioning that Jisoo’s agency, YG Entertainment, was too greedy for the female lead position in her first work. It is pointed out that only a few people, who tried to be too safe with works that guaranteed to be box office hits, received the worst result. It is said that it was her trying to skip the time to build up acting skills and learn about their strengths and weaknesses from the small roles that caused current controversies over her bad acting.

On the other hand, Hyeri has taken consistent steps ever since she began her acting career. She has spent a long time boasting her batting average by choosing relatively less burdensome works, such as “Reply 1988”. Her character in “Miss Lee”, who is bright and energetic, is also not really different from her previous roles. Although Hyeri’s character in “Moonshine” is pointed out to be similar to Duksun of “Reply 1988”, it is a great advantage for her as an actor that this is the kind of role she can do really well.

Meanwhile, it is speculated that depending on the success and final evaluation of their current works, the two might take very different paths in the future.

In the case of Jisoo, this controversy over her poor acting performance since her debut drama is likely to be a burden for her in the future. On the other hand, if Hyeri’s drama in which she plays the female lead continues its initial atmosphere and ends successfully, it would pave the way for Hyeri to take on more main character roles, competing with other actresses, who are in their late 20s and early 30s.
