Korean netizens are currently debating whether JYP will definitely hold on to Twice – the company’s “golden goose”.
One of the topics that have been causing the most consternation among Kpop fans in recent days is whether TWICE will re-sign with JYP or not. The band made its debut in 2015, and its contract is set to expire in 2022. However, based on evidence of the group’s recent actions and JYP’s attitude, netizens believe that more than one member (particularly Jeongyeon, Mina, and Chaeyoung) will not stay with the firm.
Between the management company and the idol is an inseparable symbiotic relationship. The company that helps idols shine. On the contrary, when achieving success and fame, the stars will bring huge profits to the company. Netizens have been arguing that JYP or Twice will be at a disadvantage if the renewal of the contract fails.
On a popular Korean forum, a post titled “What will happen to JYP if the contract renewal with TWICE fails?” suddenly rose to the top of a hot issue. Although everyone assumed TWICE would struggle if they left, the creator of the post claimed that it was JYP who was greatly affected.
The reason is that the 9 girls have had sustainable careers, extremely high public awareness, and still bring profits to the company both in Korea and Japan. Meanwhile, the rest of the company’s groups have not been able to balance all these factors.
Whatever happens, JYP must try to hold on to TWICE. There aren’t many bands with six years of experience whose album sales, music streams, and music videos are all at the top of the charts right now. TWICE, on the other hand, owns all three of these qualities.
If TWICE disbands, JYP will be left with 2PM, DAY6, Stray Kids, and ITZY. Isn’t it going to be difficult for JYP to keep their fame if they just have these four groups? And we also don’t know if DAY6 – the group that debuted at the same time as TWICE will renew their contract. If unfortunately, both groups choose to leave, the situation will quickly deteriorate.
For now, JYP should hold on to TWICE. Netizens think that if JYP loses the group, it will be like losing a diamond mine, not just a golden-goose anymore.
One of the reasons why many people think that maybe TWICE won’t re-sign with JYP is because the company suddenly promoted the debut of a new girl group. Accordingly, the company announced that it will launch a new girl group in 2022 even though ITZY has just debuted in 2019. The management appears to have foreseen that the contract would not be renewed, thus they had to rush the introduction of a new girl group to fill the “void” left by TWICE. The fact that JYP continues to implement TWICE’s music activities demonstrates that the company is attempting to maximize the earnings generated by the 9 girls in the time remaining.
Even though no one can say anything, netizens believe that the members’ decision to leave is not unexpected and that it is the better way for them. Even without JYP’s support, the girls can attain success because they have the best beauty, talent, and reputation in Kpop.
Furthermore, although it is now in its seventh year of operation, no members have outstanding individual projects. Perhaps JYP has learned from the mismanagement of Miss A, but this is what makes Once dissatisfied because each member’s individual reputation is comparable to that of any other idol. They believe JYP is attempting to stifle the girls’ personal growth.
Apart from Wondergirls, JYP has not really trained a girl group with a top reputation like Twice. We may have to wait a long time to see the next group achieve Twice’s level of success.
Many Knets agree with this viewpoint. They stated that, even though there are still many controversies surrounding TWICE’s vocal abilities, the group’s accomplishments and impact on the 3rd generation Kpop industry is deniable. Furthermore, ITZY and the rookie girl group will take a long time to catch up to TWICE.
On the other hand, some Knets believe that JYP does not need to hold on to TWICE because of the member. They claimed that TWICE is only genuinely strong as a team, and that no one, not even Nayeon or Jihyo, is capable of going it alone. The company always schedules the 9 members together and does not allow anyone to debut solo or have outstanding individual activities, putting them in a tough position if their contracts are not renewed.
