Korean netizens are currently debating whether JYP will definitely hold on to Twice – the company’s “golden goose”.
One of the topics that have been causing the most consternation among Kpop fans in recent days is whether TWICE will re-sign with JYP or not. The band made its debut in 2015, and its contract is set to expire in 2022. However, based on evidence of the group’s recent actions and JYP’s attitude, netizens believe that more than one member (particularly Jeongyeon, Mina, and Chaeyoung) will not stay with the firm.
Between the management company and the idol is an inseparable symbiotic relationship. The company that helps idols shine. On the contrary, when achieving success and fame, the stars will bring huge profits to the company. Netizens have been arguing that JYP or Twice will be at a disadvantage if the renewal of the contract fails.
On a popular Korean forum, a post titled “What will happen to JYP if the contract renewal with TWICE fails?” suddenly rose to the top of a hot issue. Although everyone assumed TWICE would struggle if they left, the creator of the post claimed that it was JYP who was greatly affected.
The reason is that the 9 girls have had sustainable careers, extremely high public awareness, and still bring profits to the company both in Korea and Japan. Meanwhile, the rest of the company’s groups have not been able to balance all these factors.
Whatever happens, JYP must try to hold on to TWICE. There aren’t many bands with six years of experience whose album sales, music streams, and music videos are all at the top of the charts right now. TWICE, on the other hand, owns all three of these qualities.
If TWICE disbands, JYP will be left with 2PM, DAY6, Stray Kids, and ITZY. Isn’t it going to be difficult for JYP to keep their fame if they just have these four groups? The management appears to have foreseen that the contract would not be renewed, thus they had to rush the introduction of a new girl group to fill the “void” left by TWICE.
