Variety pointed out that in a year the world entertainment industry was heavily affected by the Covid-19, 4 YG Entertainment idols still achieved great success by releasing their first full album, The Album.  After only a short time, The Album reached number 1 on the iTunes top album chart in at least 57 countries and regions, including the US, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Spain, France, Thailand,… Before its release, The Album surpassed 1 million pre-orders.  The Album became the best-selling album of a girl group in Korea, surpassed S.E.S with the album Love – released in 1999 (760,000 copies).  This is also the album with the highest number of pre-orders ever recorded for a Kpop girl group.

The girl group also collaborated with famous singers to release a series of songs including Sour Candy (feat Lady Gaga), Cardi Bet You Wanna (feat Cardi B), and Ice Cream (feat Selena Gomez). BlackPink’s documentary Light Up the Sky was released shortly after and received a lot of positive feedback from the audience. “Their popularity knows no borders”, Variety emphasized.  Online newspaper Variety also mentioned the music video How You Like That with 86.3 million views in 24 hours on YouTube when it debuted in June 2020 and the first online concert titled The Show that was held at the end of January 2021.
