The real reasons why Lee Jun-ho and Lee Se-young’s ‘The Red Sleeve’ could surpass Song Hye-kyo’s ‘Now We Are Breaking Up’

Reporter-turned Youtuber Lee Jin-ho revealed behind-the-scenes stories about MBC drama “The Red Sleeve”.

On December 8th, a video titled, “The real reason why Lee Jun-ho and Lee Se-young could surpass Song Hye-kyo”, was posted on Lee Jin-ho’s Youtube channel.

Lee Jin-ho began the video by saying, “MBC’s drama The Red Sleeve has caused a craze these days with its ratings exceeding 10%”. He mentioned tvN’s Jirisan, which is aired at a similar time to The Red Sleeve and SBS’s drama Now, We’re Breaking Up, saying, “In fact, the competition of Friday-Saturday dramas gained huge attention was because of the face-off between Jun Ji-hyun and Song Hye-kyo.”

Then, he said, “However, the unexpected winner of this Friday-Saturday dramas competition was The Red Sleeve. Jirisan and Now, We Are Breaking Up were left behind due to the rise of an unanticipated battle between the two dramas.” Lee Jin-ho also revealed behind-the-scenes stories of how The Red Sleeve topped the rating chart among famous dramas. He explained, “In fact, Lee Se-young and Lee Jun-ho were not supposed to play the main characters in The Red Sleeve. Other actors were cast, but due to various problems, the production was halted.”

Citing the remark of an official in the entertainment industry, the Youtuber said, “The fact that the production failed once seems to have become a good thing. I think the role of King Jeongjo found Lee Jun-ho, who could portray this character perfectly.”

Regarding the 2nd reason why The Red Sleeve won the competition between dramas of the same broadcasting time, Lee Jin-ho pointed out, “PD Jung Ji-in, who was in charge of directing The Red Sleeve, has a really good reputation. On the outside, she is quite strong and has a ‘female warrior’ style. However, she is well-known as a person who takes good care of people around her”. The Youtuber also mentioned Jeong Hae-ri, who previously worked as the youngest writer of MBC’s “Lee San, Wind of the Palace”, worked on the script of The Red Sleeve and improved the quality of this drama.

Lastly, Lee Jin-ho pointed out the 3rd reason, which is the actors’ “passionate performance”. He said, “In particular, Lee Jun-ho is more attached to The Red Sleeve than any other work”, and explained that Lee Jun-ho had taken thorough care of his body by not touching a little bit of snack from the coffee trucks at the filming sites in order to maintain a great body for the body-revealing scene.

Regarding the female lead actor Lee Se-young, Lee Jin-ho said, “Despite the poor filming environment, after getting vaccinated for the second time, Lee Se-young concentrated on filming without taking a break or recovery days off from the vaccination”, adding, “Even though she is the female lead, she took care of all the staff at the filming set.”

SBS’s The Red Sleeve, which began airing in November, depicts the sad romance of a king, who prioritizes his country, and a court lady who protects the life she has chosen. The drama has received many compliments for making good use of the affectionate romance of King Jeongjo – Lee San and Eui Bin Sung with solid directing and the actors’ acting skills.
