A video capturing a verbal showdown between a white child’s parents and a black woman at a theater in the US erupted a controversy.
On May 30th, netizens spread a video showing an argument between a black woman and white parents that occurred while watching Disney’s live-action film “The Little Mermaid” at a theater in the United States.
According to the video, a white child muttered “she looks like a monster” while watching the black mermaid princess, the main character in the film. Unable to hold back, the black woman stood up and protested vehemently.
Despite attempts by those around to calm the situation, claiming it was just a children’s movie, the black woman couldn’t contain her anger and unleashed a barrage of strong insults.
The theater, which should have been filled with the innocence of children, quickly turned into a chaotic scene with shouting and profanity from both sides.
Amidst the disorder, the cries of frightened children within the theater could be heard, and some audiences even demanded refunds, stating that they couldn’t enjoy the movie due to the argument.
Upon viewing the video, netizens expressed opinions such as, “Many children were surprised by the appearance of the mermaid princess, which was so different from the animation,” and “They should have explained to the child in advance that the mermaid princess is black.”
Meanwhile, Disney’s live-action film “The Little Mermaid” has been constantly surrounded by controversy. Casting a black actress for the role of Ariel sparked the controversy of “destroying the original work.”
However, the film has been performing well at the box office. While the global audience response has been more critical than positive, the box office results show a favorable trend.
