Squid Game’s Director explained the accusation of the movie spreading prejudices against women
The Netflix series Squid Game keeps on becoming more popular worldwide, and some people even say that this drama may surpass the popularity of Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite.
However, there are people who feel uncomfortable watching Squid Game. In particular, they said this drama contains many scenes that show strong prejudices against women. The scenes showing violence against women and the way Han Mi Nyeo (Kim Joo Ryeong) takes advantage of her femininity to lead the game were pointed out.
In this regard, during an interview with MaxMovie, Squid Game’s director Hwang Dong Hyuk said, “It’s hard for the creator to agree with criticizing only a part of their characters. If people keep sticking to that standards, they will limit the creativity of the creator and make them become self-censored.”
Regarding Han Mi Nyeo’s characteristics, he explained, “I can hardly agree if you claim that only one scene is a sign of hatred for women. A lot of female characters appear in this film. The drama also shows solidarity and friendship when men are deceived. In this drama, I chose many different options and made the characters in harmony”.
Meanwhile, Squid Game, starring Lee Jung Jae, Lee Byung Hun, Park Hae Soo, Jung Ho Yeon, and Kim Joo Ryeong, depicts a mysterious survival game with the prize money of 45.6 billion won. This drama is currently available on Netflix.
