“Squid Game” Director revealed new version of Season 1’s ending

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk who recently announced the plan for production of Squid Game Season 2, has made headlines by releasing a different ending from the existing ending.

On November 9th (local time), U.S. entertainment media Entertainment Weekly released an interview with director Hwang Dong-hyuk.

In the interview, director Hwang revealed that “Squid Game” had another ending.

The drama “Squid Game” ended with Sung Ki-hoon (played by Lee Jung-jae) turning back to avenge the organizers of the “Squid Game” instead of getting on the plane to meet his daughter in the United States.

Director Hwang said, “We actually wrestled between two different scenarios for the ending.”

He then said, “There was one, the other alternate ending, where Gi-hun would get on the plane and leave.,” drawing surprise from fans.

This was one of the endings that many viewers wanted.

Director Hwang said, “We constantly asked ourselves, is it really right for Gi-hun to make the decision to leave and go see his family, to pursue his own happiness? Is that the right way for us to really propose the question or the message that we wanted to convey through the series?”

Eventually getting to produce a series for Netflix, the director decided to end it with Sung Ki-hoon not flying to the U.S for a deeper meaning of the potential second season. He said. “The question that we want to answer — why has the world come to what it is now? — can only be answered or can only be proposed if Gi-hun turned back and walked towards the camera. So that’s how we ended up with that ending in the finale.”
