Squid Game director opens up about season 2 content: Focus on a special character

This is the factor that will unexpectedly “take the spotlight” of Squid Game season 2?

The Korean public has never received a craze as big as Squid Game.  Released on September 17, the film became an unprecedented frenzy around the world, topping Netflix in more than 90 countries.  The success of Squid Game is considered unprecedented in Korean television.  After the first season ended with many mysteries, the audience is still setting high expectations for the second season of Squid Game.

Squid Game 2 is currently unconfirmed by neither Netflix nor director Hwang Dong Hyuk.  The reason is that the first season took him ten years to develop, so Squid Game 2 will require a lot of time.

The audience, on the other hand, is still curious as to what will happen next in the Squid Game, especially given the open ending in which the character Gi Hun decides to return to the game.

In an interview with The Times, director Hwang officially revealed his intentions for the next season of Squid Game. “While I was writing season one, I thought about the stories that could be in season two if I get to do one—one would be the story of the Frontman.” – Hwang revealed.

The frontman character is a surprise to the audience.  It was not until the end of the series that this character took off his mask, revealing his identity as Lee Byung Hun, surprising the audience.

Notably, Frontman is actually the biological brother of police officer Jun Ho. The drama reveals that he was a winner of one season of the Squid Game before becoming the moderator for the following season. The character’s motivation, as well as his past and psychology, remain a complete mystery.

Therefore, making Frontman the center of season 2 is also extremely interesting.  The series can continue the story of season 1, revolving around this character.  Or, Squid Game 2 could revolve around another “season”, when Lee Byung Hun’s character becomes the winner.

Even policeman Jun Ho may also be exploited in Squid Game 2. Director Hwang shared: “I think the issue with police officers is not just an issue in Korea. I see it on the global news that the police force can be very late on acting on things—there are more victims or a situation gets worse because of them not acting fast enough. This was an issue that I wanted to raise. Maybe in season two I can talk about this more.”

Director Hwang further shared that the inspiration for Squid Game came from his poor childhood, along with influences from Japanese comics.

“I started making films in 2008. At that time, my family was very poor; we owed a lot of money,” he shared. To escape from the harsh reality, director Hwang immersed himself in the world of comic books like Liar Games or Battle Royale. “I thought, ‘I’m also willing to play a game like this to win money. If there’s this game in Korea, how would it be different?’ And that’s when I started composing Squid Game.”
