Song Hye-kyo and Song Joong-ki’s divorce leads to a new penalty for breach of contract

The divorce of actress Song Hye-kyo and actor Song Joong-ki has even caused a stir in the drama industry. The contract to appear in drama series has changed.

Song Joong-ki returned to the small screen for the first time in three years with tvN’s weekend drama “Arthdal Chronicles“. Having rarely seen him in dramas since “Descendants of the Sun”, he has returned to the small screen with a 50-billion-won blockbuster made by producer Kim Won-seok, who once worked with Song Joong-ki during the KBS 2TV drama “Sung Kyun Kwan Scandal”. “Arthdal Chronicles” was such a masterpiece that even part 3 was pre-produced. The performance was not worth the name of the actors and producers, but the ratings fluctuated between 6 and 7%.

Meanwhile, Song Joong-ki reported the divorce settlement with Song Hye-kyo on June 27, ahead of the ninth episode of the “Arthdal Chronicles“. They were married amid such a grand celebration, but chose to part due to personality differences that both failed to overcome after just one year and eight months. The two sides have reached a smooth agreement and went through the divorce process which was finalized on July 22th.

More than anything else, the news of Song Joong-ki’s divorce happened at a very sensitive time: the drama was still on air. “Arthdal Chronicles” has a total of 18 episodes which are divided into 3 seasons: the 1st and 2nd seasons which are until the 12th episodes have been aired in the 1st half of the year, while the 3rd season will soon be on aired in the latter half this year. But before Part II ended, he expressed his position on the news of the divorce, and Song Joong-ki’s personal history heated up South Korea. Although it did not have a significant impact on the ratings of the drama, it could not have had a positive impact on the production. There was more talk about the divorce announcement when the work was not even finished.

The drama industry reacted quickly, seeing these sensitive situations. They believe that the same thing should not be repeated by adding a “divorce” clause to the drama contract. “There was no provision regarding divorce before the divorce of Song Hye-kyo and Song Joong-ki in the contract to appear in the drama, which is written between the production company and management agency. However, after the announcement of their divorce, “divorce” was added to the personal private column of the contract. If issues related to divorce occur after the contribution contract, and affect the work, the actor/actress will have to pay up to three times the penalty”.
