Some fans are mad about the webtoon release in collaboration with BTS, “You call this a webtoon just by adding speech balloons into photos?”
Prior to the release of the webtoon-web novel featuring BTS, its event cut toon was released.
On December 25th, Naver’s webtoon “Super Casting: BTS” posted a cut toon for the launch of “7 Fates: CHAKHO”, which contains the collaboration story with BTS. The main character of the first cut toon released on the same day was Jin. The cut toon showed a few photos of Jin’s back and phrases, such as “I was walking down the hall of an old building”, “A mysterious light suddenly appeared”, “It disappeared the moment I felt a strike in my body”.
The last page contained a few behind-the-scenes cuts of Jin, along with an ambiguous phrase, raising fans’ curiosity about “Super Casting: BTS”. On the following day (December 26th), Suga’s cut toon was released. In Suga’s cut toon, there were only a few photos of him and a phrase, saying, “The closet door opened, and the unknown light which I couldn’t take my eyes off swallowed him”.
Although cut toon was like a piece of teaser that came out before the release of an official webtoon-web novel, some fans have shown signs of discomfort, saying, “You call this a webtoon just by adding some speech balloons into the photos?”, “It looks more like a meme that is used widely on SNS”. In particular, a netizen claimed, “Naver Webtoon is a place for people to draw their own creations. I don’t know if it’s possible to call this a webtoon if they just put in some pictures and do some edit cuts.”
Meanwhile, “7 Fates: CHAKHO” will feature a story created by a collaboration with BTS. Story films of BTS members, unveiling the message of “destiny” – the main theme of the story, have also been released. The released videos showed BTS members wandering in search of something along with the bright light shining in the dark. The camera’s lights illuminated the members one by one from different directions, hinting at the inevitable story of those bound by fate.
“7 Fates: CHAKHO”, which has aroused high expectations from fans ever since before its release, will be unveiled in 10 countries around the world on January 15th, 2022 through Naver Webtoon platform.
